Experts from the World Health Organization have endorsed the use of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford. According to them, the preparation can be administered to people over 65 years of age. It is also recommended that this vaccine be used in the presence of coronavirus variants.
AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. WHO opinion
WHO said it is likely to approve the coronavirus vaccine in mid-February, even though it does not yet have all the data on it. Therefore, it has now only issued a recommendation for the wide use of the preparation, emphasizing that the benefits outweigh the risks.
“Every day, thousands of people in many countries around the world die from infection,” said Alejandro Cravioto, chairman of the Strategic Advisory Group on Immunization Experts (SAGE). – So it makes sense to do everything we can to use a product that can help, even if the information (…) is not as accurate as we would like.
In its recommendations, the WHO expert group points out that the “studies of the vaccine to date were aimed at assessing its effectiveness in all forms of disease severity, but the insufficient number of people during the trials did not allow for an accurate assessment of the efficacy of the vaccine in severe forms of COVID-19”.
“Nevertheless, WHO now recommends the use of AZD1222 vaccine (…) even if there are new variants of the coronavirus in a given country,” the organization said.
