The fourth dose of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine for all adults is increasingly being talked about. For now, it can be taken by seniors and people with impaired immunity. At the moment, there is no recommendation of the European Medicines Agency regarding the administration of the preparation to people over 18 years of age. It will probably appear at the turn of June and July.

Fourth dose: who can take it?
Currently in Poland, the fourth dose (i.e. the second booster) of the vaccine against COVID-19 can be taken by two groups: people aged 80+ and people over 12 years of age with impaired immunity, in whom the immune response to vaccination may be insufficient.
Vaccinations of the first group started on April 20, people with reduced immunity could take the fourth dose earlier.
A second booster dose may be taken five months after the first. Only mRNA vaccines: Comirnaty (Pfizer) or Spikevax (Moderna) are used for booster vaccination. The Ministry of Health recommends vaccination with the same preparation that was administered during the first booster vaccination.
Fourth dose: when for everyone?
There is increasing concern about the need to give a fourth dose to all adults. Although summer has only just begun, an increase in coronavirus cases is expected in the fall, so now you need to think about protecting yourself against the next wave.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Health, Wojciech Andrusiewicz, spoke last week about when the group of people entitled to booster vaccinations will be expanded.
– We are waiting for the decision of the European Medicines Agency, but the decision to use the fourth dose for the 18+ population will be made only after the end of clinical trials by pharmaceutical companies. We hope it should happen soon, but by the time these studies are completed, there will be no EMA decision pointing to the widespread use of the fourth vaccination – he said in an interview with PAP.
Earlier, Andrusiewicz said that «everything indicates that the EMA recommendation will appear at the turn of June and July«.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Health also said that research on the virus-targeted booster in the Omikron variant is ongoing. – The completed first part of the manufacturers’ research indicates the high effectiveness of this directional vaccine. Importantly, it should be available in the fall – he said.
EMA recommendations in this regard are due in September. – This omicron booster will be available to people who have undergone the full vaccination schedule with existing vaccines or are vaccinated with the first booster dose – he stressed.
Prime Minister Morawiecki: I will take the fourth dose
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki recently recalled the fourth dose of the vaccine available to all adults. In the podcast “Adventures of Entrepreneurs” he spoke about the government’s actions during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as about preparations for a possible next wave and related restrictions.
– I hope it will not be necessary to go back to the restrictions, but I am warning everyone today against what may happen in the fall. COVID-19 may come back, so let’s follow sanitation. It’s one thing, but the second is let’s get vaccinated with this third, or sometimes fourth, dose. I myself want to take the fourth dose in a few weeks and get vaccinated again – he declared.
Morawiecki said that, as in the case of flu vaccinations, he will also benefit from seasonal vaccination against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
– Perhaps also those who want to get vaccinated against COVID-19 will be able to get vaccinated every year and if it is possible, I will I would like to have this vaccine before the fall season because I believe it protected. I encourage everyone to do so. The more people are vaccinated, the greater the chance that we will also avoid any economic perturbations, he added.
Fourth Dose: Which Countries Serving?
In most countries, the second booster dose is given to groups similar to those in Poland: seniors and immunocompromised people. It is also received by residents of nursing homes.
Israel began administering the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine for the first time. Already in January, it began to be given to people aged 60 and older. In the United States, the FDA in May recommended giving a second booster to people in the 50+ age group.
