A group of 45 million nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals wrote an open letter about changes that should be made. Doctors say that something is even more in danger of us than the coronavirus pandemic. In turn, the World Health Organization (WHO) described this problem as “the greatest health threat to humanity”. WHO: You have to act fast
9-year-old Ella Kissi-Debrah died in 2013 from an asthma attack. The girl was exposed to heavily polluted air in south-east London. The report prepared after Ella’s death was clear: the 9-year-old was killed by climate change. Thus, it became the world’s first victim of a polluted environment.
The report by the World Health Organization was written as a memorial to Ella Kissi-Debrah, but also to “all the other children who have suffered and died from air pollution and climate change”. We read in it that WHO calls for quick action to improve the situation, which, the organization writes, is the greatest threat to human health.
Healthcare requires action that goes beyond the health sector, the report reads.

Like the coronavirus pandemic, the climate crisis has had catastrophic consequences, threatening people’s lives or the capacity of the health system. Moreover, both of these crises also revealed social inequalities in which some societies are more vulnerable to negative effects than others.

Doctors: Climate change is more catastrophic than COVID-19
In parallel, a group representing 45 million doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals around the world wrote an open letter on the need to act for the climate.
As health care professionals and workers in this sector, we see our ethical duty to speak out about the rapidly worsening crisis, which could be much more catastrophic and prolonged than the COVID-19 pandemic, the letter reads. – Those people and nations that benefited most from the activities that triggered the climate crisis (especially the extraction and use of fossil fuels) have a huge responsibility to do everything possible to help those who are now at the highest risk .
Among the greatest threats, mentioned both in the WHO report and in the open letter, are: air pollution, floods, storms or extreme weather leading to hunger, e.g. as a result of crop destruction.
