The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed 31 people so far and could threaten more towns, the World Health Organization (WHO) warns.
On August 17, an epidemic in the north-west of the country was officially announced, reports the BBC News portal.
Ebola is highly contagious and kills up to 90 percent. infected people. There is no vaccine or cure for this disease, which spreads by close contact and causes extensive internal hemorrhage.
Deaths more than doubled in the week following the announcement of the epidemic in the cities of Isoro and Viadana.
“The epidemic is not under control. On the contrary, the situation is very serious, ”said Eugene Kabambi, a WHO employee in Kinshasa. Kabambi added that if nothing was done, the disease would spread to other places and could also threaten big cities.
In the last month, an outbreak of the deadly strain of Ebola killed 16 people in neighboring Uganda. However, health professionals say the two outbreaks are not related. (PAP)
