White Lady as a Bartender: Breckfest Martini and St. Thomas [Like a Bartender]

The history of the White Lady cocktail

For the first time this cocktail gained popularity in the late 30s of the last century. The name appeared due to the color and delicate taste of the drink, besides, it was because of the softness that it was ordered mainly for ladies.

Disputes about who owns the original recipe periodically arise today.

According to one version, which is considered more real in Europe, the Irishman Gary McElhone, who worked as a bartender in his own Parisian restaurant Harry’s New York Bar, was the author of the cocktail. His original recipe called for mint liqueur instead of gin.

According to another version, which is very popular in the USA, the author of the cocktail is bartender Harry Caerdock from the famous Savoy Hotel.

In many books about the art of bartending, the authors come to the conclusion that it is quite possible that the recipes coincide by chance, that is, both bartenders at the same time, being many thousands of kilometers apart, created the same cocktail recipes.

Currently, a cocktail can be made only by explaining the recipe to the bartender, because it has not been on the menu of popular establishments for a long time.

Only classic bars serving rare cocktails include it in their assortment.

Variations of the White Lady cocktail

  1. Classic white lady – Egg white is added to gin, lemon juice and Cointreau.

  2. French version of the White Lady – mint liqueur is used instead of gin.
