White House COVID-19 team coordinator Jeff Zients warned on Thursday that the Delta variant of the coronavirus poses a greater threat to young people than other SARS-CoV-2 variants. He added that the data showed an increase in infections, mainly among young and unvaccinated people.
Experts from the presidential team announced at a press conference that over the past week the average number of new cases in the US increased by 11 percent. Moreover, in 24 states, the number of cases has risen above 10 percent.
The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Rochelle Walensky stressed that approx. 93 percent. COVID-19 cases have been recorded in counties with vaccination rates below 40% Zients added that almost all deaths – over 99,5 percent – and hospitalizations occurred among unvaccinated people.
On Thursday, a Georgetown University study in Washington identified five low-vaccinated areas most vulnerable to new waves of infection. They are all located in the states of the South, incl. in Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas.
“The low vaccination rates in these counties, coupled with high new cases and loose restrictions that do not protect the unvaccinated, will surely lead to further unnecessary suffering,” said Walensky.

On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden announced that the federal authorities would send teams of experts, along with the necessary equipment, where there are outbreaks of infection.
The low vaccination rates among younger people, who often feel they are not susceptible to the coronavirus, are particularly worried, Zients said. He found this to be a misguided feeling, pointing to studies suggesting that the spreading Delta variant was more likely to cause severe symptoms than other variants. As he added, reaching this group is currently the administration’s priority.
