White gooseberries are not as popular as yellow or red ones, but they are fruitful. Most species have large berries. The fruits are healthy, with a sweet and sour taste.
Among the large-fruited varieties, one can distinguish “Transparant” and “Antagonist”. In the first species, the berries are creamy white, covered with hairs. They reach a weight of 40 g.
Antagonist is a table variety. It gives good yields, creamy white berries reach 53 g. The variety is thermophilic, suitable for cultivation in the southern regions. Freezing is not excluded in the middle lane.
Small-fruited and medium-fruited varieties:
- “Uktussky White”. Received as a result of crossing “Ural Mountain” and “English Yellow”. The advantages of the variety are high yield, frost resistance, powdery mildew resistance. The bushes are compact, up to 1,5 m in diameter. The yield peaks in the 3rd year. Up to 4,5 kg of crop can be harvested from a bush. Berries weighing 2,7-3,9 g, they are oval, white-green in color. The pulp is sweet and sour.
- “White Triumph”. One of the oldest dessert gooseberry varieties. Bushes are powerful, spreading. There are thorns on the shoots. The gooseberry is frost-resistant, but in severe frosts, the tops can freeze. The highest yielding variety of all white varieties. Berries weighing up to 15 g, oval, covered with villi. The pulp is juicy, sweet and sour.
Berries of white varieties can be eaten fresh, used to make jam, marmalade or jam.
This early variety should be singled out separately. Suitable for growing in the Northwest regions. Spreading bushes, medium-sized. Shoots are straight, covered with large sharp thorns. The length of the spines reaches 1,2 cm.
Variety characteristic:
- Berries weighing 1,5-3 g, sometimes the fruits reach 4 g. They are round, light green in color. A slight yellow tint appears on the sunny side.
- The pulp is juicy, sweet. Tasting score – 4,6 out of 5 points. The fruits contain a lot of seeds, up to 20 seeds.
The advantage of the variety is stable fruiting and high taste characteristics of the berries. A significant drawback is the strong spine of the shoots.
Plant gooseberry bushes in spacious, sunny areas with fertile soil. They do not like excess moisture and cold. Providing favorable conditions for the gooseberries will give the fruit a dessert taste.
