Whiskey is chilled with ice cubes. But when melted, ice dilutes the drink with water, worsening the taste. This problem was solved by Andrew Hellman, who proposed to replace the ice with polished stone cubes. Later they were called “Whiskey Stones” (Whisky Stones). We will look at the benefits and rules for using this new accessory for alcohol connoisseurs.
The optimum serving temperature for whiskey is 18-21°C. Ice not only dilutes, but also excessively cools the drink to 10-15°C. As a result of the solidification of essential oils, whiskey loses its unique aroma. In addition, ice cubes hold the temperature for no more than 10 minutes, after which the contents of the glass are warm again.
Whiskey stones are devoid of these shortcomings. Made from the safe material steatite (soapstone), they perfectly accumulate cold or heat without affecting the taste. Whiskey stays cold for 25-30 minutes.
Steatite deposits are found only in the USA (Vermont) and Scandinavia. After extraction, the material is subjected to manual polishing. The pebbles are smooth and do not scratch the glass of the glasses. Scandinavian peoples use steatite to make dishes, attributing healing properties to it.
How to use whiskey stones
According to the instructions, before the first use, the purchased stones are washed well with a sponge in warm water to get rid of dust residues. 2-3 hours before the start of the party, they are cooled in the freezer. For one serving of 50-70 ml, it is enough to put 3-4 stones in a glass. After use, it is recommended to rinse the stones with cold water and put them back in the case. Under these conditions, they serve for many years.
Whiskey stones are also great for keeping hot drinks like coffee or tea warm. It is enough to put them in the microwave for 30 seconds, then add 2-3 pieces to a cup with a drink.
When choosing whiskey stones, pay attention to the material from which they are made. Cheap Chinese counterparts made of granite disguised as steatite appeared on sale. Due to the porous structure, granite absorbs odors and pathogenic bacteria. Chinese stones can cause health problems and are not quality controlled.
The cost of real American whiskey stones starts from 600 rubles (in 2014). The price depends on the number of stones and the originality of the packaging. Gift options will cost 3000-4500 rubles and more.
