Whiskey Sour perfectly combines four components of a good cocktail: moderate strength, slight bitterness, sourness and subtle sweetness. The drink has become a classic and is included in the IBA (International Bartenders Association) codification. The availability of ingredients along with the simplicity of the recipe make Whiskey Sour at home.
Historical information
The first prototypes of “sour” cocktails appeared in the XNUMXth century in the British Navy. To prevent scurvy and vitamin C deficiency, English sailors mixed lemon or orange juice into their rum. It turned out that it is not only useful, but also tasty. After some time, citrus juice began to be added to gin and whiskey.
There are two versions of Whiskey Sour’s appearance. According to the first, the cocktail was invented by the English bartender Elitott Stubb, who moved to live in Peru, where he opened his bar in the port town of Iquique. After several years of experimentation, Stubb successfully mixed whiskey with lemon juice. The resulting drink became the signature cocktail of his establishment. Due to the fact that the bar was located near the port, sailors from different countries learned about Whiskey Sour, they spread the cocktail recipe around the globe.
According to another version, the Whiskey Saue cocktail was invented by one of the most famous bartenders in history, the father of American mixology, nicknamed “Professor” – Jerry Thomas. In 1862, he published How to Mix Drinks, which mentions Whiskey Sour. In 1870, one of the local newspapers in Wisconsin (USA) published a recipe for a cocktail, which became the starting point for its popularization.
