Whiskey Jura: history, features, review of taste and types

Scottish scotch “Jura” is produced on the territory of the island of the same name, located off the western coast of the country. The local single malt, like its distinctive hilly homeland that inspired George Orwell to write the dystopian 1984, has a bright and memorable character.

History of the Jura brand

Jura Island is amazingly beautiful, but not particularly suitable for making whiskey. On all sides, it is surrounded by wild wild waves and treacherous whirlpools that prevent the safe transportation of drinks. This forced the makers of scotch to develop a special branded bottle with rounded edges that is resistant to damage. Nevertheless, whiskey has been made in these parts for a long time: it is assumed that the first distillery was founded here in the XNUMXth century.

The history of local drinks is shrouded in secrets and legends. It is said that the development of the industry was not without the participation of dark forces and witchcraft curses.

The facts are that the Isle of Jura distillery was launched in 1810 and did not last long.

The exact name of the creator is unknown: it is assumed that in the early years the company was owned by the farmer William Abercrombie, the merchant John Hemp and the Ferguson family.

By the end of the XNUMXth century, the distillery collapsed and, in this form, survived all the ups and downs of the XNUMXth century: world wars, American Prohibition and other difficult times for the alcohol industry.

It was rebuilt by local residents only in 1963. Assistance in the restoration was provided by the Scottish architect Delm Evans, in whose memory a special batch of whiskey was produced at the distillery. Subsequently, the enterprise, spread out on the shore of a picturesque lake, repeatedly changed owners.

Today the company is owned by Whyte & Mackay.

Jura production features

  1. Thanks to a crystal clear underground spring originating in the mountains of “the Paps of Jura” and a special marine microclimate, the whiskey acquires its unique “island spirit” and exceptional softness.

  2. Natural drying of malt without the use of peat eliminates the sharp smoky flavor in the brand’s drinks. Bright smoked notes can be found only in individual copies of the collection.

  3. The Isle of Jura distillery has the highest stills among the island distilleries, which give a special purity and lightness to the resulting alcohols. Whiskey is produced by the classical method of double distillation.

  4. The richness and roundness of the taste of the drinks is imparted by a long exposure in different types of oak barrels, which are brought to the island from all over the world.
