Whiskey Canadian Club (Canadian Club): history, review of taste and types

Whiskey from Canada is hardly a frequent guest on the table of even the most notorious fans of malt drinks from the countries of the post-Soviet camp. Meanwhile, it not only exists, but also has a very good quality.

Canadian Club is the most famous example among premium North American blends.

Brand History

Founded a popular brand of alcohol, grain merchant Hiram Walker. In 1858, he opened his own distillery in the Canadian state of Ontario, in close proximity to the US border.

A working settlement formed around a large enterprise, which by the end of the XNUMXth century grew into the small town of Walkerville and later became part of Windsor.

The site for the construction of the plant was not chosen by chance: in addition to proximity to the American Detroit, local lands were famous for their excellent grain quality.

Before the advent of Hiram Walker and Sons in Ontario, whiskey drinkers would come into the store with their own containers and fill them from an unmarked cask. The visiting farmer decided to change the established order.

Walker was one of the first to label every keg that went on sale. Light, smooth, well-balanced drink fell to the taste of Canadians. Products from Walkerville began to be served in prestigious gentlemen’s clubs, which led to the consolidation of the name “Club Whiskey” for it.

Hiram’s blend was appreciated not only in Canada. In the United States, “gentleman’s whiskey” became so popular that it was able to displace native bourbon. As a result, the US government required manufacturers to indicate the country of origin on the bottles. This is how the Canadian Club brand was born.

During the American Prohibition, the famous whiskey was smuggled into the United States. Among the gangsters involved in the organization of illegal transportation, Al Capone himself was seen.

Today, the Canadian Club is part of the Beam Suntory product portfolio, but still retains the same taste worthy of true gentlemen and experienced whiskey connoisseurs.

Production features

The secret of the unique bouquet of Canadian whiskey lies in the preservation of the 1858 recipe and the original production technology. She suggests:

  1. Manual selection of grain components (rye, rye and barley malt, corn). For each product, the ratio of different types of raw materials is different.

  2. Mixing of distillates before aging. This approach provides drinks with smoothness and a special, recognizable taste.

  3. Aged in old American White Oak casks. Each type of whiskey is aged for a certain time.
