Whiskey Aberfeldy (Aberfeldy): history, review of taste and types

Gorgeous, buttery, fruity-honey scotch “Aberfeldy” is produced in the heart of Scotland – in the vicinity of the city of Perth.

For more than a hundred years, malt has been the basis of John Dewar & Sons blends.

You can try a unique drink that has won many international awards, not only as part of blends, but also in a single version.

Brand History

The Aberfedley distillery was opened by brothers John and Tom Dewar in 1898 on the south bank of the River Tay in the highlands of Perthshire. The outstanding architect Charles Doig participated in the design of the building.

The owners began to use the spirits produced at the plant to create Dewar’s Blended Whiskey scotch and other blends. The company started producing single-molts much later.

The distillery got its name from the settlement of Aberfedli, on the eastern outskirts of which it was built. The area attracted the brothers with a clean source of fresh water “Pitilie Burn”, previously not used in the production of whiskey, and developed transport links.

It is also known that the founder of the company, John Dewar Sr., was born nearby. The region has also become famous for its other attractions: the beautiful Loch Tay and Loch Tummel lakes, the ancient Kenmore Bridge.

During the XNUMXth century, the enterprise was closed twice due to a lack of barley – during the First and Second World Wars.

In the 70s, the distillery was expanded: the old stills were replaced with new ones, and the production capacity was increased.

The Aberfeldy brand was first introduced to the consumer in 1999 as a 12 year old single malt scotch.

In the 2000s, the line was replenished with several more aged molts. Today the distillery is owned by Bacardi.

Types of whiskey Aberfeldy

The legendary single-malt is produced in four main versions:

  1. Aberfeldy 12 Years

Award-winning amber-honey drink with notes of spices, vanilla and smoke.

  2. Aberfeldy 16 Years

An aged scotch with fruit tart and chocolate flavors and a rich, rich finish.

  3. Aberfeldy 20 Years

“Golden Sip”. A line of exclusive tapes produced in limited quantities. Includes three collections: “cask bottlings”, “double-cask” and “small batch releases”.

Each batch matures in a certain way in different types of containers and has its own flavors. Special barrels are selected by the master blender.

You can recognize exceptional drinks by the white label (the rest of the brand’s scotch labels are black).

Main notes: spices, honey, grapes, heather, coconut, smoke.

  4. Aberfeldy 21 Years

Layered, aromatic whiskey with a honey-creamy texture. The taste is dominated by notes of dried fruits, heather flowers, roasted coconut.

At the distillery itself, you can buy malts of different years of release in the “single cask” category.

High-strength drinks (55%) are aged in one type of barrels – American oak containers.

Everyone has their own taste: with a predominance of nutty, smoky, fruity, vanilla, caramel or oak tones.
