Vitamins are essential for the proper development of a toddler. The demand for this type of nutrients is particularly high during the period of intensive growth of the child. Which of the vitamins is especially worth giving to our comfort?

Vitamin A

It is responsible for the development and growth of the body, hormone production, vision and bone formation. It also protects against heart disease and cancer and prevents the skin from drying out. Symptoms of its deficiency include, among others, growth retardation, lack of appetite, frequent infections and rash. Good sources of vitamin A are sea fish, liver, cheese, butter, egg yolk, lettuce, spinach, carrots and pumpkin.

B vitamins

There are several vitamins in this group, each of which plays a slightly different role. Good sources are primarily: liver, egg yolk, yeast and wheat germ.

  • Vitamin B1 – supports the functioning of the nervous system, muscles, heart and the production of red blood cells; it is also involved in energy production. Symptoms of its deficiency are: lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, balance disorders and vision disorders
  • Vitamin B2 – plays a key role in the production of energy in the body, it also affects the proper functioning of the nervous system, eyesight, skin and mucous membranes. Symptoms of its deficiency include hypersensitivity to light, impaired vision, red eyes and cracks in the corners of the mouth
  • Vitamin B3 – participates in the production of energy and supports the maintenance of healthy skin. Its deficiencies are manifested by weakness, diarrhea, insomnia, dizziness and headaches
  • Vitamin B5 – takes part in the production of antibodies and the renewal of the skin and mucous membranes. It also affects proper growth. Deficiencies of this vitamin are manifested by headaches and abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and skin changes
  • Vitamin B6 – takes part in the production of white and red blood cells, increases the body’s immunity and affects the proper functioning of the nervous system. Symptoms of its deficiency include insomnia, apathy, irritation of the tongue and mucous membranes, and lower resistance to infections
  • Vitamin B12 – supports the work of the nervous system and is responsible for the formation of genetic material and red blood cells. Symptoms of its deficiency include irritability, fatigue and unpleasant body odor

Vitamin C

Being a strong oxidant, it prevents cell damage and death. Using also affects the bones, cartilage and ligaments, accelerates healing and increases the body’s immunity. Its main sources include gooseberries, grapefruit, wild rose, white, red and black currants, strawberries, raspberries, onions, cauliflower, potatoes, tomatoes and broccoli. Vitamin C deficiencies are manifested by reduced immunity, lack of appetite, fatigue and greater bone fragility.

Vitamin D

Responsible for proper bone mineralization. It can be found, among others, in fish such as eel, sprat, herring, salmon or mackerel, as well as in egg yolk, liver, butter or cheese. The main symptom of vitamin D deficiency is malabsorption of calcium and phosphorus, which in children under two years of age can cause rickets.
