Before choosing a warm electric floor for an apartment / house, decide whether it will be the main or additional source of heat in the room.

In addition, it is important to choose the type of room where the product will be installed (kitchen, nursery, bathroom, corridor), as well as the type of floor material (tile, laminate, parquet, wooden floor, etc.).

As a rule, under the tile are motivated:

  • heating mats;
  • core warm floors;
  • heating cable.

The same types of warm floors, as well as infrared film, heating mats and panels can be installed under other types of coatings (laminate, linoleum, carpet).

Parameters that affect the choice of a warm electric floor

When choosing a thermal floor, it is necessary to take into account a number of parameters on which the final decision depends.

The main indicators should include:

  1. Room area.
  2. The general condition of the room: the presence / absence of repair.
  3. Presence of other heat sources.
  4. Planned cost.

How to choose a warm electric floor for tiles and more

The models presented above are not a panacea, it is enough to know the important selection criteria and their interpretation in order to choose an electric underfloor heating for your home based on the area of uXNUMXbuXNUMXbthe premises, the type of coverage and other requirements.

Determining the task of the heating system

When choosing a warm electric floor, decide on the task that is assigned to the device.

Here two options are possible:

  1. Comfort heating (not heating). This path is suitable when there are other heat sources in the room, for example, radiators. Here it is suitable to use a low-power cable that fits under the floor covering, or a cable that requires pouring to a height of 30-50 mm.
  2. Heating of a room where there are no additional heat sources, preference is given to a heating cable. The recommended power should be from 180 to 220 W per square meter. Using a heating mat does not give the expected result.

When using cable heating as the main source of heat, it is necessary that underfloor heating occupy at least 80% of the room.

Types of heating

There are two types of heating systems for a house / apartment using electric underfloor heating.

Consider the main options:

  1. Convection – a system in which heating is carried out using a cable (which was already mentioned above). The latter transfers heat through physical contact. Convection includes all types of electric floors, including cable systems.
  2. Infrared. Structurally, they have the form of a polymer film 0,4 mm thick, emitting far infrared rays from the surface with a wavelength of 5 to 20 microns. Black graphite strips are used as a heating element. They are powered by an alternating voltage of 220 V and are sealed in a polyester film. The advantage of graphite is its higher thermal conductivity compared to other heating systems, which allows you to get the best effect with lower consumption.

Electric water heating

Electric-water heating – is a heating system, structurally consisting of:

  1. Polyethylene pipes that are mounted under the screed (tile), inside which antifreeze circulates. The diameter of such pipes is usually 2 cm.
  2. Teflon-coated nickel cable with seven cores. The latter is stretched inside the pipe loop, connected to a 220 V network and heats the liquid.
  3. A thermostat that controls the temperature.
  1. Fast heating.
  2. Low power consumption (up to 14,4 W/mXNUMX).
  3. Heat retention for a long time (antifreeze cools down for a long time).
  4. It is not afraid of overheating (it is possible to use it under a screed under furniture).
  1. Difficulty in repairing a pipe rupture.
  2. A leak will usually cause damage to property above the underfloor heating, although this makes it easier to find the problem area.

Additional kit for installing underfloor heating

When arranging an electric floor heating system, additional equipment may be required.

Let’s highlight the main ones:

  1. Heating cable connection kit.
  2. Bituminous tape for installation. A common option is a product 60 cm wide and 10 m long. Provides fixation of the heating cable. The optimal laying distance is after 25-50 cm. Galvanized steel is used in the manufacture – 20×0,6 mm. Enough for an area from 2,5 to 5 square meters. meters.
  3. Set with clips for infrared film. Includes two terminal clamps for six copper bars.

Additional equipment may be required. For example, a temperature sensor is not always included in the kit and you have to buy it separately. When choosing such a technique, pay attention to the wire, the length of which should be sufficient for installation. Extending the cable is not recommended.

During installation, pay attention to laying a separate line that is not connected to a conventional 220V network. The thickness of the line wires should be 1,5 “square” for power up to 2300 W or 2,5 “square” for more power. To protect against electric shock, it is not superfluous to install an RCD.

Thermostats

The purpose of the equipment is to regulate the temperature of the heating of the electric floor and, accordingly, save electricity. Depending on the model and configuration, such a device may be included in the kit, or purchased separately.

By type, devices are: mechanical, electronic, programmable, touch.

Mechanical

Differ in the greatest reliability and convenience in application. Temperature control is carried out manually using a special regulator. The purchase is relevant if you need to heat a small room, and there is no need to save electricity.

Electronic

Unlike the models discussed above, an LCD screen is provided here, which displays information on the floor temperature. Based on the data obtained, it is easier to decide on the need for adjustment.

Programmable

The peculiarity of such thermostats is the ability to independently turn on / off at a certain time. They can be programmed for a day or even a week.

The use of programmable models is relevant for large areas when it is necessary to save on electricity.

Sensory

They are no different from the models discussed above, but have richer functionality. They have an LCD screen and bright backlight. To adjust, touch keys are used, with which you can easily change the temperature regime.

The advantage of the model is that it provides protection against temperature extremes, unscheduled shutdowns and the negative effects of moisture.

Thanks to this feature, touch thermostats can be placed in the bathroom or other rooms with high humidity.

Cable types

In the manufacture of warm electric floors, several types of cables are used. They are divided by the number of cores (one or two), as well as the type (resistive and self-regulating). Consider the features of each of the options.

Resistive

A brass, copper or nichrome core is used as a heating element. On its surface, two or three layers of PVC insulation are provided, which can withstand high temperatures and protect against physical influences.

Inside there is a foil that plays the function of a shield, and a wire braid for protection against EM study and grounding. The shielded part is provided with a PVC sheath.

By the number of cores, a resistive cable can be:

  1. Single core. It provides a core of copper, brass or nichrome. Next comes the insulation, the copper wire braid and the outer sheath. The design features of the product ensure uniform heat transfer in each section of the electric underfloor heating. But this can lead to overheating or weak heating at certain points. That is why it is important that the ends of the cable always converge towards each other.
  2. Two-core. The main feature is the presence of two cores. One is used to conduct current, and the second is used directly for heating. The advantage of such cables is that there is no need to bring the two ends of the cable together at one point. In addition, in a product with two cores, another insulating coating and a return core are provided.

The advantages of resistive cables are high power and good elasticity. They can be laid in parallel and thus provide heating of surfaces of different shapes.

Self-Regulating

When organizing a warm electric floor, many opt for a cable with the possibility of self-regulation. In other words, the device independently changes the heating power, taking into account the temperature regime in the room.

Structurally, the product consists of the following elements:

  • heating core (two);
  • fluoropolymer insulation;
  • polymer inner shell;
  • identification fibers;
  • outer polymer shell.

Self-regulating cable has good protection against mechanical and chemical influences. Due to the special design, the risk of overheating is minimal, and this eliminates various breakdowns.

The principle of operation of such a cable is as follows:

  • material controls the temperature in the room;
  • when it is lowered, the central part of the cable is compressed;
  • the power of the product increases, and the amount of heat rises.

With an increase in temperature, the reverse process occurs – the expansion of the central part and a decrease in the volume of heat generated. Thanks to this feature, the temperature of the cable is adjusted individually at each point, taking into account the temperature in the room.

The advantages of self-regulating cables are higher power and economy. They can be cut to the required length without compromising the performance of the product. The features also include reliability and durability.

Other selection criteria

When choosing a warm electric floor, it is important to pay attention to a number of additional features. They can affect the efficiency, economy and usability of the product.

Additional criteria:

  1. Remote air temperature sensor. Designed to determine the temperature in the room and make a decision to reduce / increase the power of the cable. So, when the indicator decreases below a certain level, it is necessary to increase the current and, as a result, the heating level of the cable.
  2. Remote floor temperature sensor. Installed in a corrugated pipe under the IR film or heating mat. Designed to measure temperature. Data from the sensor is transmitted to the temperature controller, which decides on the need to change the temperature.
  3. Timer. The main purpose of the product is to program the work of the warm floor for a certain period of time. It could be one day, a week, or another. An example is a TC 402 with a floor sensor. The device is designed to control electrical systems. There is a possibility of programming for weekends or weekdays. It is possible to program individual temperature periods within one day.

Warm electric floors can be mounted under different floor coverings. It can be linoleum, carpet, screed, tile, laminate or parquet. Given this feature, it is necessary to choose the appropriate model.

Features of a warm electric floor for tiles / screed

When used in a bathroom, hallway or other room, screeds/tiles need to be properly matched with underfloor heating.

The following materials are used here:

  1. Cable. This is a classic version of the design used for different types of flooring. It is mounted in a coupler 30-50 mm thick. After completion of work, it is necessary to wait at least a month before the first switching on. The disadvantage of the cable in the screed is the long warm-up time. Advantages – ease of changing the heating power to the “square” heating and power accumulation.
  2. Thin heating mats. Electric cables that are in the grid and differ little from the cables discussed above. Used in the presence of a fine finish for laying tiles. Sold in rolls, laid on a screed directly under the tile. Pros – high heating rate (up to half an hour), simple installation. A small screed up to 10 mm is allowed. Recommended for use in rooms with low height. Disadvantages – high price, limited power and dimensions. It is applied as the main or additional source of heat.
  3. Carbon fiber based with silicone insulation. The product can withstand temperatures up to 90 degrees Celsius, so it is not afraid of overheating. Due to the presence of a silicone shell, a high level of flexibility and wear resistance is ensured. When heated, silicone is safe and does not harm the human body. According to the developers, it is capable of operating at temperatures ranging from -60 to +280 degrees Celsius. Additional features – resistance to chemical attack, fire and moisture.

As for IR underfloor heating, their use under a screed or tile is not provided. The film is destroyed by the action of an alkaline environment, and the technology itself requires compliance with other laying conditions.

An example of an optimal floor for tiles / screed is Caleo Unimal RAIL. The model belongs to the core warm floors intended for heating of 2,49 sq. meters of the room. Power consumption is 361 W, and the dimensions of the mat are 3×0,83 m.

Under linoleum / carpet

Warm electric floors under linoleum / laminate have been used for a long time, and no special difficulties have been noticed in this matter. But when choosing, it is important to look at the characteristics of the product and the fact of being combined with heating elements. There must be a suitability badge for the underfloor heating system.

The heating system, in turn, must be smooth and not have protrusions. To fulfill this requirement, plywood is often used, which is laid on the surface and thereby levels the product.

If this condition is not met, the linoleum will stretch during installation, shrink and warp, and after a month it will lose its previous characteristics.

As for the linoleum itself, it can be of several types: rubber, glyptal, vinyl, natural or nitrocellulose.

The best options for linoleum for underfloor heating:

  1. Marmoleum is a safe and natural material. When heated, it retains its shape and dimensions, is not dangerous to humans.
  2. PVC linoleum is a more economical option, characterized by durability and wear resistance. It is used for application in production and public places. Please note that the product does not have a heat-insulating layer.

Note that almost all the considered options for electric floors are suitable for laying under linoleum. The main thing is the presence of a rigid substrate. As noted, it can be OSB-board or plywood 0,8-1,0 cm.

An alternative option is to install an infrared floor under the carpet. The advantage of this method is its high speed and ease of installation.

There are two options for the IR floor for such a coating:

  1. Mounting directly on the floor. Suitable for new buildings with a flat surface.
  2. Installation on lags. The best option for curved surfaces, including those with a wooden coating.

During installation, a reflective substrate is placed on the subfloor, then a heating cloth (fixed with mounting tape). Next comes the grounding, plywood or OSB, and the carpet itself.

An example of a model is Teplolux ProfiMat 180-1.5. The cable system is provided for floor heating. The device has a two-core type of execution, a specific power of 180 W/sq. meter, cable cross section of 4 mm and operating current of 1,41 A. The size of the mat / film is 3×0,5 m. The supply voltage is 230 V.

Under laminate

When installing a warm electric floor under a laminate, several types of coatings can be used.

Consider their features:

  1. Film infrared. Used for dry mounting without raising the level. You can turn on the device immediately after installation and at any stage of repair.
  2. Rod UNIMAT. IR floor with the possibility of self-regulation. Mounted in a thin layer of screed, which leads to a rise in level by 20-30 mm.
  3. Heating mats. Here, special products of reduced or classic thickness are used. Suitable for high sensitivity coatings and dry mounting. Can be installed during renovations. The classic version is installed in a thin screed or leveling layer of soil up to 10 mm.
  4. Heating cable. Fastening is carried out in a thick layer of screed during the overhaul. In this case, the floor rises by 30-50 mm.

Additionally, a thermostat can be used to control the temperature. The optimal temperature regime is from 26 to 29 degrees Celsius. This temperature regime avoids overheating of the coating and its deformation.

An example is Thermomat 130 LP per “square”. The heating power is 130 W per square meter of heating. Made in Sweden by Thermo. Features – dry installation, the presence of two cores, a width of 50 cm, and a cable diameter of 2,8 mm.

Parquet floor

Electric underfloor heating is intended for cold surfaces, primarily laminate, vinyl or ceramic tiles. The use of such systems for wooden coatings is allowed, but the efficiency is less. Below we will consider the main pros and cons.

Opinions against:

  1. Poor thermal conductivity. Wooden floors heat up slowly and have no energy saving qualities.
  2. The likelihood of damage. The negative effect of temperature changes and humidity can lead to deformation of the parquet and the appearance of a creak.
  3. Risks for other systems. When using plywood, it is necessary to fasten the sheets with glue with self-tapping screws. But in this case, there is a risk of damage to the electric cable and water heating pipes.

Installation of underfloor heating is possible only for 3-layer parquet boards optimized for such heating. The maximum allowable temperature is up to 23 degrees Celsius.

However, not all manufacturers recommend the use of underfloor heating. In particular, the well-known manufacturer of parquet board Kahrs does not advise many to install the products in question with a 3-layer parquet made of maple and beech. This is due to the possible negative consequences of heating such materials.

As a rule, parquet does not require the use of underfloor heating technology, because it is not cold by itself. With the correct installation of this material, additional heating is not necessary.

An example is Keeply Optimal 200. This is an IR film designed to heat a 4 sq. meters. It has a power of about 874 W, and a specific power of 200 W sq. m. The film has dimensions of 8×0,5 m. It can be laid under laminate, carpet, linoleum and parquet.

The working current is 3,63A, and the voltage is 220V. Overheating protection, fire resistance and energy saving function are provided. Average energy consumption – 59 W / h.

What types stand out in terms of durability and quality

First you need to understand what is meant by the terms durability and reliability. People often get confused with these concepts, which is why they cannot find suitable electric floors.

Here are some simple definitions:

  1. Durability is the lifetime of the equipment, measured in years. The parameter shows how many years the product can serve without significant damage.
  2. Reliability is a parameter measured as a percentage and reflects what proportion of electric underfloor heating lasts a specified period of operation.

Much depends on the correct installation and use of such products. If the manufacturer’s recommendations are followed, cable electric floors can last from 10 to 15 years, and film floors from 10 to 50.

Unlike classic products, film models are easier to repair, but they are not suitable for wet rooms. In addition, heavy furniture should not be placed on them due to the risk of damage.

Which company is better

Electric underfloor heating from many companies are on the market. The most popular include Caleo, Devi, Electrolux, Ensto, National Comfort, Rexant, STN, Teplolux and others. Pay attention to their products in the first place.

Less popular ones include 3M, AC Electric, Ensto, Extra, Fenix, IPC, Nexans, Thermo, etc. The total number of companies producing such products is more than 70.

But it is important to understand that all companies have successful and not very successful models, so study the reviews and make the right choice.

Consumption

The practice of operating such products shows that the maximum consumption of electricity is equal to its nominal power rating. As for the real parameter, it can be significantly lower.

Electricity consumption depends on a number of criteria:

  1. Ambient temperature
  2. The total area of underfloor heating.
  3. Product type.
  4. Location of the room.
  5. The fact of using a thermostat and its type.
  6. The quality of floor and wall insulation.
  7. View of the attic, ceiling and roof.
  8. The type of substrate used under the IR film.
  9. Purpose: main, additional heating.
  10. Glazing area. The more windows, the higher the consumption.

When choosing electric floors, pay attention to its purpose. If the product is used as an additional heat source, the consumption will be less. On average, this parameter ranges from 10 to 40 W/sq. meter at a heating temperature of up to 21-23 degrees Celsius. In addition, the parameter varies over a wide range and taking into account the criteria discussed above.

For example, a 1700×600 mm Hot Panel heating panel consumes electricity (see table below).

Which is better – electric or water

When choosing floors, the question often arises, what to choose – electric or water option.

There is no single answer here, because each of them has its own characteristics:

  1. The electric floor provides better uniformity of heating.
  2. Water is more suitable for heating large areas, provided that a boiler acts as a heater. In small rooms it is better to use heating that works on the electrical principle.
  3. Water does not pose a risk to human health.
  4. The service life of water heating is about 50 years.
  5. Electric floors are easier to regulate, and the accuracy of temperature changes is higher than that of water.
  6. At the stage of purchase, the electric option is cheaper than the water system.

To avoid mistakes, be sure to weigh the pros and cons, consult with experts, make calculations and compare different options.
