Where is the blood missing most? What groups are needed?

Holidays are a time when there is a shortage of blood in almost every blood donation center. That is why there is a constant appeal to donate blood. The blood group 0 Rh- is missing the most. In which regions of Poland is the situation the worst?

There is no blood in the summer

In summer, blood is needed most. Stocks are dwindling as many potential donors are leaving, and on the other hand, more accidents occur and demand increases. In summer, blood is often released only in life-threatening situations.

That is why blood donation centers (there are 21 – 16 of them in voivodship capitals and 5 in poviat cities, plus two departmental ones), as every year, are calling for blood donation during the holiday season, which lasts until the end of September. Blood can be donated at regional blood donation centers and their departments at hospitals and clinics. The centers also organize campaigns in the field – in medical facilities, clinics, offices and companies, as well as launch mobile blood buses for blood collection.

Information on blood donation actions can be found on the websites of the National Blood Center (gov.pl/web/nck) and each Regional Blood Donation and Treatment Center (RCKiK).

In addition, on the blood.info website, there is an infographic, updated daily, presenting blood supplies in 21 Polish blood donation centers. The drops symbolize individual groups: 0, A, B and AB – with positive or negative Rh factor. Red means that there is enough blood, half full is average, and empty indicates a shortage.

What blood is missing the most?

Traditionally, the blood group 0 Rh- (minus) is missing the most. Out of 21 voivodship blood donation stations, it is urgently needed in 17. Only in four it is “average” – in Gdańsk, Racibórz, Rzeszów and Wałbrzych. There was no indication that her condition was optimal in any of the centers.

The situation regarding 0 Rh + (plus) is also bad.. It is urgently needed in 11 stations, the next six report the average level, and only in four (Kielce, Opole, Rzeszów, Zielona Góra) the condition is optimal.

The same is true of A Rh- (minus). The blood of this group is urgently needed in Gdańsk, Kalisz, Kraków, Lublin, Łódź, Racibórz, Radom, Słupsk and Wrocław. Only in Kielce, Opole and Szczecin its condition is optimal.

Blood group B Rh- (minus) is urgently needed in Gdańsk, Kalisz, Lublin, Olsztyn, Racibórz, Radom, Słupsk, Wrocław and Zielona Góra.

The best situation is with the AB Rh + (plus) group. At 21 stations, they only need it in Bydgoszcz, Gdańsk, Łódź and Wrocław. In others, its condition is optimal or there is no demand.

In which cities is the situation worst?

As for the division into blood donation centers, the worst situation is in Kalisz, Lublin, Łódź and Radom.

In Kalisz and Radom, the most missing blood is 0 Rh- (minus), 0 Rh + (plus), A Rh- (minus), A Rh + (plus), B Rh- (minus) and AB Rh- (minus). Sufficient inventory is only for B Rh + (plus) and AB Rh + (plus)

In Lublin, blood is urgently needed from the groups 0 Rh- (minus), 0 Rh + (plus), A Rh- (minus), A Rh + (plus), B Rh- (minus), B Rh + (plus). The blood supply of the AB Rh- (minus) group is at an average level, only the AB Rh + (plus) status is optimal.

  1. Blood group 0 – the universal blood of the world

In Łódź, the groups 0 Rh- (minus), 0 Rh + (plus), A Rh- (minus), A Rh + (plus) and AB Rh- (minus) are missing. B Rh- (minus) and AB Rh + are at the average level, enough is only for B Rh + (plus).

The best situation is in Kielce (only 0 Rh- and B Rh- are missing) and Opole (0 Rh- and A Rh + are needed).

Who can donate blood?

Blood can be donated by a healthy person aged 18-65 who weighs over 50 kg. Anyone who volunteers to donate blood should be healthy, refreshed, well-rested, and after eating an easily digestible and low-calorie meal; he should also drink about 1,5 liters of fluids a day. You cannot drink alcohol at least 24 hours before blood donation. You should not donate blood if you have a cold (runny nose) or are taking medication.

It is completely safe to donate blood, it takes about an hour along with the tests. You must have an ID with a photo, PESEL number and address, and you must complete a detailed questionnaire with questions about your health. The doctor qualifies to donate blood after measuring the pressure and conducting an interview; before donating blood, a sample is taken, the level of hemoglobin is tested.

Each donor receives a regenerative meal, and for 450 ml of blood you are entitled to eight bars of chocolate.

Blood groups in Poland

In Poland, most people have blood group A Rh + (32 percent)people with the 0 Rh + group are second (31%). The third most common blood group is B Rh + (15%), the fourth – AB Rh + (7%).

Only the next places are negative blood groups – 0 Rh- (6%), A Rh- (6%), B Rh- (2%) and AB Rh- (1%). As you can see, only 15 percent. Poles have Rh negative blood group. Hence the serious shortages of these groups in blood donation stations, therefore there is a constant appeal to people with Rh group – to donate blood.
