A mission of scientists under the aegis of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Wuhan estimated that the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus probably passed on to humans from bats via other animals, the AP agency, which reached the draft mission report, said on Monday.

An international team of researchers, together with Chinese scientists, has also assessed the hypothesis that the coronavirus would escape from the Wuhan laboratory is “extremely unlikely,” reports the Associated Press.

The findings cited are in line with expectations, but many questions remain unanswered. Mission members recommended further research into how the coronavirus attacked humans, with the exception of the lab leak hypothesis.

The scientists completed their mission in Wuhan in mid-February, but the publication of a report on their work has been delayed. Initially, WHO announced a summary of the most important findings in February, and later – the publication of the full report in mid-March. Last week, a WHO official said the report would be ready “in a few days”.

There has been speculation that the Chinese authorities are trying to influence the content of the report so that it does not include suggestions about the country’s responsibility for the outbreak of the pandemic, writes the Associated Press.

The AP agency estimates that the version of the report that a diplomat working in Geneva gave her on Monday looks almost final. It is unclear whether the content of the report will change prior to publication.

After leaving China, some members of the international team of experts complained about the tense atmosphere and political pressure surrounding the study of the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic in Wuhan.

The origin of the coronavirus has become a political issue and is causing tensions in China’s relations with the West, especially with the US, which accuse Beijing of concealing data on the pandemic. The PRC authorities say the coronavirus does not necessarily originate in China, and may have arrived in Wuhan on frozen foods imported from abroad.
