Polish experts are alerting that the fourth wave of the pandemic will reach us in August or September. Dr. Ernest Kuchar is of a different opinion. Zakaźnik points out how we should prepare for the next wave.
- The pandemic situation in Europe is getting more and more difficult
- The highly infectious Delta variant, which is already dominant also in Poland, is responsible for the growing number of infections
- In our country, the number of infections is growing slowly. This will change, however, and it will be soon. Dr. Ernest Kuchar believes it will not be August or September, but time is short

When is the fourth wave? The expert hopes in October
In fact, from the moment when the Delta variant originating in India began to spread across Europe, Polish epidemiologists say that it will lead to another, already fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic. However, experts disagree as to when we can expect a sharp increase in the number of SARS-CoV-2 infections.
Most often it is said about August or September. However, Dr. Ernest Kuchar has a different opinion. Or at least hope that the situation will develop less dynamically.
– I’m not so sure if the fourth wave will come in September. I sincerely hope that it will not be until the beginning of October, which will allow us much more time to prepare. This is first. Secondly, the focus should be on those people who belong to the risk group. Young, healthy people somehow get this infection. On the other hand, the problem is with the elderly, who know in advance that they will be seriously ill, will develop complications, require hospitalization, and may even die, which is the worst-case scenario. Therefore, vaccination of the elderly should be facilitated – adds Dr. Kuchar.

Vaccination ads are ineffective. “This is a waste of money”
Dr. Kuchar is of the opinion that vaccinating seniors against COVID-19 should currently be the key action. With the current organization of the vaccination program, the expert admits, however, it is difficult. The modern form of registration consists in signing up via the Internet or telephone, which for the elderly, often dependent or with mobility difficulties, is a serious barrier.
– I look at my friends, my old friends and I have to tell you that virtually nobody uses the Internet and most of them have hearing problems. Therefore, even a telephone is not a good solution. You have to reach them and here even advertisements that attack us from different parts of the city will do nothing. That’s not the way to go, it’s not washing powder.
- The editorial board recommends: Scientists from the Polish Academy of Sciences about compulsory vaccinations. Who should compulsorily get the vaccine?
Dr. Kuchar believes that advertising is not an effective solution in this situation. Both for the elderly and those who do not want to vaccinate.
– Here you should take some actions that will facilitate vaccinations, not advertise them. Such ads will not convince anyone. If someone thinks vaccination is harmful to him when he sees an advertisement, what will change his mind? An elderly person who cannot leave the house, when he sees an advertisement, will suddenly get vaccinated? This is a waste of money – concludes the expert.
