«The Minister of Health aims to provide Polish patients with access to Paxlovid. In connection with the above, talks have been held for some time, including at the European Union level, ”informed the Ministry of Health. The ministry made a reservation that it is not possible to provide more precise data at the current stage of the talks.

Paxlovid is the first orally administered antiviral drug recommended in the EU for the treatment of COVID-19. It contains two active substances, PF-07321332 and ritonavir, in two different tablets. PF-07321332 reduces the ability of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) to multiply in the body, while ritonavir prolongs the effects of PF-07321332 by allowing it to stay in the body for longer at levels that help the virus to reproduce.

The EMA concluded that treatment with paxlovid significantly reduced the number of hospitalizations or deaths of patients with at least one underlying condition that put them at risk of severe COVID-19. The analysis was performed in patients who had received paxlovid or placebo (a dummy treatment) within five days after the onset of COVID-19 symptoms.

Most of the patients in the study were infected with the delta variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Based on laboratory studies, paxlovid is also expected to work against omicron and other variants, the EMA reported. (PAP)
