When is the best time to start teaching my child to use the toilet? This question is asked by many parents. According to scientists, say goodbye to diapers between 24 and 32 months of age, reports the Journal of Pediatric Urology.
These conclusions were based on the observation of 150 children aged 4 – 12 years old, including those with urinary incontinence. After analyzing the information about the time a child started potty training and the parenting methods, the researchers found that children who started getting used to the toilet after 32 months were more likely to have problems with urinary incontinence later on.
According to the lead researcher, Dr. Joseph Barone from Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital in New Jersey, the conducted analysis allowed to determine the optimal time to start toilet training.
For best results, it should be performed before 32 months of age. The starting time is more important than the methods used by parents to familiarize their toddler with the new situation.
As Dr. Barone points out, urinary incontinence can cause emotional problems and negatively affect children’s contacts with their peers.
For parents, it is often associated with guilt. Many of them think that they made a mistake and contributed to the child’s problem – says Dr. Barone. (PAP)
