When to vaccinate a child against rotavirus

When to vaccinate your child against rotavirus

I am a mother of a 5-week-old Julka. I read that among the vaccinations recommended for newborns is the vaccination against rotavirus, but it can only be given to children of a certain age. Is it true? ~ Kaśka

Yes it’s true. Rotavirus vaccine is administered orally. For full immunity, it is necessary to take 2-3 doses of it. However, as newborns get older, the permeability of the intestinal barrier decreases, which reduces the effectiveness of vaccination. Therefore, rotavirus vaccination should be completed by the age of 6 months. Although vaccination is not compulsory, I recommend it to all my patients – rotaviruses are ubiquitous and a major cause of foodborne infections in newborns.
