How does the time of day affect the absorption of vitamins?
Dr. Dimitr Marinov, assistant professor at the Medical University of Varna in Bulgaria, points out that the action and properties of individual vitamins determine the time at which we should reach for them. For example, magnesium can help reduce stress levels and help you fall asleep. This is why we should take it in the evening. The same is true for melatonin. This dietary supplement should be taken up to one hour before bedtime.
While the time of day does not change how effectively your body absorbs vitamins and minerals, it matters whether you take them with or without a meal.
Which vitamins to take on an empty stomach and which after eating?
“Water-soluble vitamins and minerals should be taken on an empty stomach because the body can digest and metabolize them more easily,” notes Alana Kessler, dietitian and nutrition consultant. These include, among others, vitamin C and B vitamins. That is why it is worth drinking them with a glass of water. “Since these vitamins are most effective when taken on an empty stomach, they are best taken in the morning,” says Kessler.
It should also be emphasized that especially B vitamins are able to positively influence our mood and increase our energy. Therefore, it is even more worth reaching for them in the morning to be able to enjoy well-being throughout the day.

Other vitamins that are best taken on an empty stomach include:
- Iron. Certain foods, especially dairy products, can block its absorption. That is why it is worth reaching for it just before a meal. Moreover, our body is best at absorbing iron when it is taken along with vitamin C.
- Probiotics. Research has shown that certain types of probiotics, such as those containing Lactobacillus i Bifidobacterium, are most effective when taken up to 30 minutes before a meal.
Make an e-package for everyone – preventive examinations in the minimum, medium or maximum version.
So what vitamins should we use after or during a meal? First of all, those that are fat-soluble, ie A, D, E, K. “Taking them with food ensures optimal release of bile and pancreatic enzymes in the stomach, which are necessary for their absorption,” says Dr. Marinov.
Other supplements to take with food include:
- Calcium carbonate. Stomach acid, produced when you eat, helps your body to use this type of calcium. Calcium citrate, on the other hand, can be taken with or without food, so check the label for what type of calcium your supplement contains.
- Multiwitaminy. They usually contain both water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins. Therefore, it is better to take them with food. Thanks to this, we will ensure the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
- Magnesium. When we take it on an empty stomach, it can cause diarrhea, among other things.
