When to replant daylilies in fall or spring
To determine how and when to transplant daylilies, you need to understand the breeding characteristics of these plants. By transplanting correctly, you can get a strong and beautiful flower.
Is it possible to transplant daylilies in the fall
These flowers, unlike most other perennials, can grow in one place for more than 15 years. Thanks to a powerful, cord-like root system that has thickening, they are able to extract nutrients deep from the ground, moreover, they are less sensitive to soil depletion. Nevertheless, after 5-6 years, their inflorescences become smaller and lose brightness. A change of place helps to rejuvenate them and restore their beauty. The older the bush, the more it grows and it becomes more difficult to dig up and divide it.
Daylilies are best replanted before or after flowering.
Daylilies are quite unpretentious and tolerate transplanting well. It is desirable to combine it with reproduction. In the fall, work should begin in mid-August, when flowering is complete. The plants should have enough time to root before the onset of cold weather. If the days are hot, replant them in the evening, and in cool weather – during the day.
The possibility of an autumn transplant depends on the type of flower and the climatic zone. Some varieties of daylilies bloom until October and, when dividing, will not have time to adapt to a new place. In the northern regions, frosts are possible as early as September, and problems can arise even in plants with an early flowering period.
How to transplant a daylily in spring
The plant tolerates a spring transplant best of all. By this time, the earth should warm up well, which happens depending on the area from April to May. The works include the following operations:
- Carefully dig out the root ball. Place it in a bowl of water; when the soil is wet, rinse the rhizome.
- Divide the roots. Small bushes share their hands, overgrown – with two forks or with a knife. Remove rotten and dead parts, shorten the rhizome, leaving about 20 cm, sprinkle the cut with ash.
- Prepare the wells. Pit a few centimeters larger than the rhizome. Fill the bottom with a mixture of earth with compost, charcoal, sand.
- Plant a bush. Place the separated part in the hole, straighten the roots, sprinkle with soil, water.
Already this summer, the daylily bloom can be expected, however, it will not be complete. If necessary, you can transplant in the summer, but in this case it is not worth dividing the bush.
Choose the time of transplant based on the ability of the flower to strengthen before winter. This procedure will not cause difficulties, will rejuvenate the plant and extend its life.
