When to plant tulips in 2022 according to the lunar calendar
There is hardly any cottage where tulips would not grow – these are one of the most popular flowers. They are planted in September. And we will tell you how to do it correctly, taking into account the lunar calendar in 2022

How to determine landing dates in your area

The optimal time for planting tulips is the second decade of September. You can’t plant before – they will sprout and their sprouts will be killed by frost. Later is also not desirable – the bulbs must have time to take root before the soil freezes – tulips need 30 – 45 days to develop roots.

However, later it is still possible, but in this case, the flower beds in the winter must be mulched.

Favorable days for planting tulip bulbs according to the lunar calendar: 18, 20, 23 – 25, 27 – 30 September.

How to grow tulip seedlings

Tulips are planted in the garden only in autumn and it is important that they take root before frost, but do not sprout. Therefore, seedlings do not grow them.

If you bought the bulbs late, for example, at a sale in November, you should not send them to the refrigerator until spring – they do not store very well. It is better to plant them in the garden, even if it is December and it snows! In this case, the snow must be shoveled from the soil, make holes in the ground to the planting depth, put the bulbs there, fill it with soil (you can buy it from the store), and throw dry leaves or sawdust on top, and put coniferous branches on top.

Where to plant tulips

It is desirable that the site for tulips be on a hill – they do not like stagnant water. And it is important that the groundwater does not rise above 60 – 80 cm. It is also necessary that it be sunny and protected from the winds (1). Soils should be light, permeable (2).

Every year (if you dig up the bulbs in the summer), you need to plant them in a new place – not the previous plot of tulips can be returned after 5 – 6 years, not earlier. Otherwise, they will accumulate diseases.

How to plant tulips

The distance between the bulbs when planting depends on their size:

  • large bulbs (I analysis and extra) are planted at a distance of 7 – 9 cm from each other;
  • medium (II analysis) – 6 – 7 cm;
  • small (III analysis) – 4 – 5 cm;
  • children – 3 – 4 cm.

The depth of planting depends on the size of the bulb, but it is very simple to determine it – it should be equal to 3 bulb diameters. If, for example, you have a bulb with a diameter of 3 cm, then you need to close it to a depth of 9 cm. The depth is considered from the bottom of the bulb.

After planting, it is useful to mulch tulips with humus, compost or peat with a layer of 5 cm. But not immediately, but when the soil freezes by 1–2 cm (3).

Tulip Care Tips

Since they develop very quickly in spring, they do not need watering – the plants have enough moisture in the soil that remains after the snow melts.

A year before planting on the site, it is useful to add 2 buckets of manure or compost per 1 sq. m.

Immediately before planting, 4 tbsp. spoons of double superphosphate and 2 tbsp. spoons of potassium sulfate per 1 sq. m – they are scattered on the surface of the soil and dug up. After 3 – 4 weeks, when a good root system is formed, you need to add nitrogen – 2 tbsp. spoons of ammonium nitrate per 1 sq. m.

Another top dressing should be done in the spring, when the first buds appear. At this time, tulips need nitrogen (1,5 tablespoons of ammonium nitrate per 1 sq. M) and potassium (1 tablespoon of potassium sulfate per 1 sq. M).

Popular questions and answers

We talked about planting tulips with agronomist-breeder Svetlana Mikhailova.

How to use tulips in landscape design?

Tulips bloom early, so they can be combined with other primroses: daffodils, hyacinths, primroses. In a flower garden, they are best placed near plants that begin to grow late, for example, with hostas. By the time the host has leaves, the tulips will have faded. And when the leaves dry up at the tulips, the bald spots will hide the hostas.

Do I need to plant tulips in special baskets?

This is optional, but baskets have a number of advantages. If tulip bulbs are not dug up annually, they will gradually deepen and stop blooming. And the basket does not allow them to go into the soil. In addition, it protects against mice. And also from ourselves, because sometimes we forget where we have tulips and start planting something else there. If the bulbs are in the basket, you will stumble upon it with a shovel and remember.

Can tulips be grown in pots?

Can. But in order for them to bloom, they need to provide a dormant period – about 3 months.

If you intend to grow tulips in pots in the garden, for example, to decorate a patio or porch, then the bulbs can be planted in pots in September and buried in the garden.

If you want to get blooming tulips at home. Then the bulbs planted in pots should be taken out to the balcony or put in the refrigerator.
