When to plant garlic seeds
When wondering when to plant garlic, decide what you want to get. Sometimes, instead of the expected weighty heads, small garlic grows in the beds. The problem is the annual planting of the material. If you have been planting a crop with your teeth for more than 3 years, then the plants will degenerate. Garlic becomes small and less resistant to disease.
When to plant garlic seeds
Garlic seeds are the bulbs that form on the arrowhead of the plant. Planting such seeds will allow you to get a single clove – garlic, consisting of one clove. The next year, a full-fledged large head is obtained from a one-toothed tooth. Carrying out such an operation every 3 years, experienced gardeners renew the culture and always have a full harvest.
The crop is planted in early spring or fall. On this basis, it is divided into spring and winter. In the middle lane, winter crops should be planted before mid-October. If you decide to plant garlic in the spring, make your planting material an artificial winter. To do this, two weeks before planting, remove the teeth wrapped in a damp cloth on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator.
Planting time for spring garlic is mid-April. Before sowing, immerse the planting material in warm water for 12 hours. You can pre-treat the teeth with growth stimulants.
Benefits of planting before winter
If we compare the two seasons, when it is better to plant garlic, then in autumn it is more preferable. This will allow the garlic to overwinter naturally and take root properly. The following advantages of winter garlic can be distinguished:
- Seed material in the form of bulbs can only be obtained when planting before winter.
- Unlike spring garlic, which is made only with chives, winter garlic can be planted with bulbs and chives.
- Planting before winter does not create problems with soil cultivation, and in spring, garlic is planted early, and the earth has not thawed yet.
- Winter crops give a higher yield than spring crops.
- The aroma is brighter in winter garlic.
- Planting before winter shortens the ripening period, in contrast to summer planting.
Despite the fact that some bulbs freeze out in winter, there are enough of them to obtain high-quality planting material. One arrow contains 70-80 seeds.
To prevent the seeds from freezing, you need to make grooves for the garlic up to 10 cm deep or deepen the planting material by 5 cm and cover the soil with hay and dry leaves.
Garlic is planted in the middle lane in spring and autumn. Seeds are sown mainly before winter. This is due to the long period of growth of the culture. In areas with severe winter frosts, garlic is planted in spring. The southern regions with long summers also make it possible to grow garlic planted in spring.
