There are two types of garlic: winter and spring.
Both of these groups of garlic belong to the same species – garlic (Allium sativum). Their main difference is in the timing of landing. But not only.
What is the difference between spring and winter garlic
Sign | Winter garlic | Spring garlic |
Landing time | Autumn – the bulbs hibernate under the snow | Spring – bulbs do not hibernate even with shelter |
Flowering | All varieties form arrows with air bulbs | Does not form arrows (exception – variety Gulliver) |
Number of teeth | Usually less than 10 pieces | Usually 30 pieces or more |
The location of the teeth | In one row around the central rod | In several rows in a spiral – small in the center, larger outside |
Size of teeth and heads | Bulbs and cloves are large, the harvest of winter garlic is always higher | Bulbs and cloves are much smaller, the yield is much lower |
Storage | Poorly stored | It is stored perfectly – without problems it lies for a whole year, until the next harvest |
Reproduction | teeth, air bulbs | Only teeth |
How to determine landing dates in your area
Winter. Recently, winters have become unpredictable, so experts recommend planting winter garlic in 2 terms: at the end of September and in mid-October.
A good indicator for starting planting is the morning temperature of the soil, which should not be higher than 14-15 ° C for several days. And the air temperature should be within 5 – 7 ° C (1).
Spring. In order for the bulb to gain maximum mass in a short summer, spring garlic should be planted as early as possible. Optimally – when the soil has warmed up to 5 – 6 ° С. In the middle lane and the Moscow region – this is the third decade of April (shoots are not afraid of frost). The deadline for planting spring garlic is the beginning of May.
Favorable days for planting spring garlic according to the lunar calendar: April 13 – 14, 21 – 22, 25 – 26, April 30, May 1 – 15.
Favorable days for planting winter garlic according to the lunar calendar: 1 – 5, 5 – 6, 11 – 14, 18, 20, 23 – 25, 27 – 30 September, 2 – 3, 6 – 7, 11 – 12, 15 – 17 October
When to plant garlic for seedlings according to the lunar calendar
This method is only suitable for spring garlic, it is rarely used, but it will allow you to get a crop earlier than usual. This, by the way, is important in the northern regions, where the summer is very short and cold.
In this case, the cloves are planted at the end of March in boxes 12–13 cm high. They are filled with fertile soil (universal store soil is suitable), grooves are made and onions are planted in them to a depth of about 3 cm. The distance between rows is 4–5 cm, in row – 3 cm.
Seedlings of garlic are planted in open ground as soon as shoots appear. If tightened with disembarkation, a single-toothed bulb is formed by autumn.
Favorable days for planting garlic for seedlings according to the lunar calendar: March 4 – 7, 11 – 17.
Favorable days for planting garlic seedlings in open ground according to the lunar calendar: April 25 – 26.
Where to plant
– Garlic is best planted in the place where tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage or legumes grew last year, – recommends agronomist-breeder Svetlana Mihailova. – You can not plant it after onions and other bulbous plants – they have common diseases. And it is also impossible to replace strawberries, because they have a common pest – a nematode.
How to prepare soil for planting
Garlic loves fertile soil, so you need to fertilize the beds well before planting. For 1 sq. I need to enter:
- 0,5 buckets of humus;
- 0,5 buckets of rotted sawdust;
- 1 liter jar of wood ash;
- 1 liter jar of chopped chicken manure;
- 1 liter jar of fluffy lime (if the soil is acidic).
Fertilizers are evenly scattered over the soil surface and covered with a rake.
You can’t add fresh organic matter for garlic! Otherwise, the whole crop will rot.
How to prepare garlic cloves for planting
Before planting, it is useful to treat the cloves with Maxim Dachnik (3) or another modern fungicide according to the instructions. This will protect the garlic from diseases.
How to plant garlic
Spring. The planting depth for it is less – 2 cm (from the top of the clove). If planted deeper, the bulbs will take longer to mature and may not ripen if the summer is short. Distance between rows – 18 – 20 cm, in a row – 5 – 6 cm (2).
Winter. Again, given the unpredictability of winters, it is better to plant teeth at different depths – one row is 4 cm, the other is 8 cm (from the top of the clove). Distance between rows – 25 cm, in a row – 10 – 15 cm.
Garlic Care Tips
Watering. The first month after germination, garlic is watered once a week. Then until the end of July – 1 time in two weeks. From August, watering is stopped, otherwise the bulbs may rot and will not be stored. Water consumption rate – 1 bucket per 1 sq. m.
If it rains, the garlic does not need watering.
Feeding. Garlic consumes little nitrogen, the humus that was introduced before planting is enough for it.
But he needs a lot of potassium and phosphorus. Therefore, immediately after planting the teeth in the aisles, it is necessary to add (per 1 sq. M)
- 1 st. a spoonful of potassium sulfate;
- 2 tbsp. spoons of double superphosphate.
– Garlic does not like potassium chloride and urea – never use them to feed this crop, – warns agronomist Svetlana Mikhailova.
Acceleration of ripening (for spring garlic). In a cool rainy summer, spring garlic ripens longer and sometimes the bulbs do not ripen even with very early planting. And to speed up this process, you can use one of two tricks.
Trick #1: tear up the roots. They do this around the middle of August – they take it by the stem and begin to slightly stretch the bulb. At the same time, part of the roots will break, the growth of the plant will slow down and the garlic will direct all its forces to the maturation of the head.
Trick #2: tie the leaves. This is also done in mid-August – the leaves on each plant are simply tied into a knot. After that, they will stop growing and send their nutrients to the bulb.
Preparing for winter (for winter garlic). If the winter turns out to be snowless, the garlic cloves may freeze.
“Therefore, in late autumn, plantings are mulched with humus or mature compost with a layer of 3 cm. And on top also with fallen leaves – about 5 cm,” advises agronomist Svetlana Mikhailova.
In the spring, as soon as the snow melts, the mulch must be removed.
