You can use ready-made soil mixture from the store, but it is better to prepare the soil yourself. Mix the soil from the garden, humus and coarse sand in a ratio of 1:2:1. On a bucket of this mixture, add 4 tbsp. tablespoons of superphosphate and 2 cups of ash – it will provide seedlings with nutrients and protect it from the black leg, to which eggplants are very susceptible (2).

Before mixing all the components (earth, humus and sand), it is useful to steam them in a water bath so that all pests and pathogens die.

Before sowing eggplant seeds for seedlings, pour the soil in cups with melted snow water or melt ice from the freezer.

How to prepare seeds for sowing

Before sowing, put the seeds for 20 minutes in a 1% solution of potassium permanganate, then rinse several times in running water. After that, the seeds can be sown in cups.

It is useful to hold the eggplant seeds in a solution of aloe juice before sowing: wrap the cut leaves in polyethylene, put in the refrigerator on the top shelf for 5 to 6 days, then squeeze the juice from the leaves and dilute it with water in a ratio of 1: 1. Aloe is a great growth stimulant. After seed treatment, the eggplant yield increases even in an unfavorable summer.

Eggplant seeds are sown to a depth of 0,5 cm. The pots are covered with foil and placed in the warmest place, where the temperature is kept within 28 – 30 ° C. You can put them on the battery, after covering it with a towel.

Tips for caring for eggplant seedlings

When shoots appear, transfer the pots to the lightest window sill.

Keep eggplant seedlings away from tomato seedlings – they don’t like growing next to each other.

Water the eggplant seedlings only with warm water (24 – 25 ° C) every 5 – 6 days so that the entire earthen lump is wetted.

Liquid fertilizer is better suited for feeding eggplant seedlings. Ideal: 10 ml (2 caps) per 1 liter of water. Top dressing should be carried out once every 2 weeks.

It is also useful to spray the seedlings with Epin-extra (1) 2-3 times – this will enhance the growth of young plants and strengthen their root system.

It is useful to cover the space between the beds with a black film – it accumulates additional heat.
