Excess water in the body does not mean that we should stop drinking it. This seemingly trivial remark is quite important because many people misinterpret the term for this condition. Water is a very important element of our body, and providing it in the right amounts provides the body with the necessary microelements and minerals. So what is water retention in the body and what are its causes?

Excess water causes swelling of the legs and the whole body. Sometimes even the face is swollen, which makes it look more “pucata”. Additionally, water retention is the enemy of a shapely figure – apart from the fact that there are more of us, the weight also shows too much. When we suffer from this condition, despite the diet and sacrifices, the weight is still in place (or growing), we feel heavy, and our stomach is often bloated.

There are several main reasons water retention in the body:

  1. Too much salt in the diet – fans of crisps, salty fries, over-salted dishes should say goodbye to such a diet as soon as possible. The sodium in salt causes water to be stored in the cells, which contributes to swelling. Replace salt with herbs, avoid ready meals and sauces, as well as fast food.
  2. Weight loss and frequent diarrhea – potassium is a very important ingredient that prevents it water retention by sodium. It is found in many everyday products, but its deficiencies and excessive removal from the body cause: laxatives, diarrhea and weight loss. Also people who consume excessive coffee, alcohol and use heart and diuretic drugs may suffer from potassium deficiency. How to get rid of the problem? Eat more vegetables and fruits, then you will prevent deficiencies of this ingredient.
  3. Menstruation – you know that feeling when before or during your period you feel extremely heavy? Or maybe your weight shows more than usual? Women’s natural menstrual cycle also contributes to water retention. They are most “threatened” in the second phase of the cycle. After the bleeding stops, the retained water also disappears. In addition, some contraceptives may contribute to water retention in the body. If in your case medication may be the cause, and not just menstruation, be sure to consult your doctor.
  4. No movement and not enough fluids – physical activity causes the blood to circulate more efficiently, thanks to which we do not lead to the formation of edema caused by fluid stagnation in the tissues. In addition, paradoxically, a dehydrated body will retain water faster. Our body is “smart” and stores up, so it stores fluids. Drink 1,5 to 2 liters of water a day to remove swelling and prevent this problem. Preferably pure, non-carbonated, with the addition of lemon, possibly green teas and herbal teas (horsetail, nettle, yarrow, birch). Carbonated and sweetened drinks are forbidden!
