Doctors warn that a woman’s age matters when trying to conceive. Ideally, a woman’s body is best adapted to motherhood before the age of 30. However, the modern mode of functioning, i.e. career, the need to settle down, definitely extend this period. Fortunately, with today’s advances in medicine, getting pregnant in your thirties is not difficult or risky. Despite this, specialists do not recommend giving birth after the age of 40, mainly due to the possible complications, although of course this does not exclude a successful delivery at this age.

Getting pregnant is often a carefully considered decision. Couples weigh the pros and cons, raise funds, try to eat healthily and gradually adapt their lifestyle to the arrival of a new family member. It is good to prepare for pregnancy well in advance by taking folic acid for six months. During this period, usually after discontinuation of hormonal contraception (often used for a long time), the woman should observe her cycles and whether she has fertile mucus.

Calculate your fertile days, make love often

In the case of 28-day cycles, the period of greatest fertility falls on the 12th to 15th day of the cycle. Longer or shorter cycles need to be calculated approximately 14 days before your period. However, the period of ovulation lasts only a few hours, so it is not worth attaching so much importance to it – by far the best way to conceive is frequent intercourse.

Folic acid – prepare your body for the baby

It is essential for fetal development, but should be taken both before and during pregnancy. Folic acid supplementation is recommended by doctors to all women until the end of the 12th week of pregnancy. Its deficiency leads to neural tube defects. Such defects are too common in Poland, especially in the case of unplanned pregnancies. Children with this problem are born to healthy parents and in families where a child with such a defect has never been born before.

The best prophylaxis here is taking folic acid, both earlier and during pregnancy – then we will avoid exposing our newborn to dangerous complications, such as encephalocele, spina bifida or anencephaly. That is why it is recommended to take folic acid even if a woman is not planning to become pregnant but is having regular intercourse.

Don’t think about procreation! Focus on your partner

The psychological factor is also important. The more we focus on the desire to have a child and approach sex as a duty, the greater the risk that it will cease to be enjoyable. Sometimes the awareness that we love each other to have a child effectively reduces libido. That is why you must not treat bedroom frolics in terms of a method of procreation, but make love as often as possible with the thought that not necessarily now, right away, but over time it will bear fruit in the form of a child.
