When is the sex of the baby visible on ultrasound? Can sex be checked by other tests? How common are errors in determining the gender of a child? How does the doctor determine the gender of the child? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.
When can the sex of a child be determined by ultrasound?
Hello and welcome! After many years of efforts, I finally managed to get pregnant and for a week now I can say that I am a new mom! However, my husband and I can’t wait to finally find out whether we have a son or a daughter. As far as I know, the sex of a child by ultrasound can be found only after the 12th week, preferably after the 20th week – is it true?
Is it possible to go to the gender diagnosis earlier? We really want to be 100% sure whether it is a boy or a girl. Are there often mistakes in the ultrasound examination of a child’s sex? Besides, I wonder how to recognize the sex of the child? Is the mere fact that the photo will not show the penis and scrotum sufficient evidence that I will give birth to a girl?
In addition, I would like to know more about how to prepare for the test. Apparently, you can’t eat or drink anything a few hours before him, but I’m not entirely sure. Is it worth having a child under ultrasound examination several times to be sure that the sex has been correctly determined? As you know, no man is infallible. Thank you very much for your answer. Regards.
The doctor will explain when it is easiest to recognize the sex of the child
According to the guidelines it is not recommended fetal sex determination before the 12th week due to low effectiveness (54%). You have to remember when going to the first ultrasound that the possibility of finding the sex of the fetus it depends on how the fetus is oriented – if the genital area is inaccessible to the doctor, he cannot guess. After the 12th week of pregnancy, the effectiveness in the correct diagnosis of the child’s sex is 91-98%, with a greater risk of not recognizing the male fetus.
However, it should be remembered that the accuracy depends on the experience of the person conducting the test, the type of apparatus on which the ultrasound is performed, the week of pregnancy and the sex of the child. At 12 tc, the child’s sex is found after the child is visualized in the sagittal plane that divides the body into two almost symmetrical halves, left and right. After visualizing the child in such a plane, we pay attention to the genital area and find a bulge, depending on whether it is turned at an acute angle towards the head or caudal. In the first case, we find a male fetus, in the second – a female fetus.
Please note that during an ultrasound, the doctor is not required to inform you about the sex of the child – please ask if you want to know. On the other hand, the doctor must describe it in ultrasound if there are genital pathologies, e.g. testicular hydrocele or clitoral hypertrophy (usually seen in ultrasound performed in the later weeks of pregnancy).
Regarding the preparation for the ultrasound examination – a filled bladder is very important, as it allows better visualization of organs. 2 hours before the test, empty the bladder, then drink about 1 liter of fluid up to an hour before the test and do not empty the bladder until then. Two-piece clothing is also a good idea to ensure easy access to the belly without undressing for examination. You do not need to fast, you can eat your meals normally.
