What is the pacifier used for?
Ending the pacifier is a sometimes difficult process, as much for the parents as for the child. The little ones are particularly attached to their pacifiers because the suckling gives them a calming and comforting effect which naturally reminds them of the warm and reassuring breastfeeding of the first months of their life. Even if there is no precise age for this weaning, the majority of children will gradually abandon the pacifier from 2 or 3 years old. At this age, they are more and more interested in friends and the many games or activities gradually allow them to put the pacifier aside. To know that beyond 3 years, the intense use of the pacifier can cause problems of dentition and pronunciation.
At what age does the child separate from his pacifier?
For many children, parting with the pacifier marks the passage to the world of “grown-ups”. That is why you have to respect their rhythm and go gradually. You can start by suggesting that they leave “Ms. pacifier” at home when you go out. Also suggest using his pacifier only for bedtime.
We must start by imposing certain gradual limits and avoid abrupt withdrawal at all costs (by throwing the pacifier in the trash, for example). Above all, it is not necessary not fall into denigration: “You are a baby”, “Look, your cousin doesn’t have his pacifier anymore”… This type of message makes the child insecure and delays the process even more.
Try to use positive messages : “You’re a big girl now, I know you don’t need your pacifier anymore to take a nap. We’re gonna give it a try today, okay? “.
Tips for gently separating it from the pacifier
When you feel that your child is ready to take the plunge, you can suggest that they place their pacifier in a container that will go to “In the land of pacifiers” or in the keepsake box. Remember: when it’s done, don’t go back, otherwise everything will have to be started over. Do not see this step as a parental challenge to be taken up as soon as possible, but as a journey that your child must accomplish at their own pace.
