What you need for sugaring: a guide for beginners

Sugar waxing is a time-tested way to remove unwanted hair and keep your skin smooth for weeks. Can I do the procedure myself? Yes, but you have to be prepared. We tell you what you need for shugaring at home.

What do you need to know about sugaring?

Sugaring is hair removal using a special sugar paste (a sticky substance that captures unwanted hairs and is then removed along with them). The difference between this method of depilation and waxing is that sugar caramel is applied “against the hair”, and removed in the direction of hair growth (with wax depilation, everything happens the other way around).

It is believed that this method is less painful, but much depends on the skill and technique.

In shugaring, two techniques are known:

  1. manual involves the removal of sugar paste by hand, used by professionals;

  2. bandaging is carried out with the help of special strips (bandages), as with waxing, suitable for beginners.

Sugar depilation can be done independently at home. In addition to the paste, you will need consumables for shugaring: a set of tools, tools for skin preparation and subsequent care.

What you need for shugaring at home: a complete list

So, here is a list of everything you need for shugaring at home.

Paste

Of course, the first thing you need to purchase for shugaring is sugar paste. You can cook it yourself, but do not waste time for a dubious result. It is easier and more reliable to use the finished product. There are several types of pastes that differ in density. The use of one or another variety depends on the treated area, the quality of the hair, and even the temperature of the hands and the air in the room.

  • soft paste good for thin hair, large areas and cool air temperatures, but in hot conditions it is difficult to work with it, as it melts quickly. Such a paste is often available in cartridges for convenience.

  • Medium density paste can be applied everywhere, on any hair, at any temperature, using any technique – both manual and bandage. What a beginner sugar depilation master needs.

  • Dense suitable for removing hard, short hairs in hard-to-reach areas (armpits, bikini) at any temperature. Such a paste requires heating up to 40 degrees and exclusively manual equipment.

If you’re not sure which sugar paste to choose and have never waxed yourself, it’s best to get a waxing starter kit that has everything a beginner needs. Usually, in addition to universal sugar paste, it includes spatulas, strips and other consumables for shugaring. A list of all required materials is provided below.

Tools and supplies

Complete kit for a beginner shugaring master:

  • Disposable gloves

    Vinyl, latex, rubber, nitrile – at your discretion. They are necessary for the use of paste in manual technique. Gloves keep the temperature of the hands and help beginners avoid sticking, spreading the material. Take gloves one size smaller so that they do not slip at the time of stretching and removing the paste. With the bandage technique, there is no urgent need for gloves, but it is better to use them so as not to get your hands dirty.

  • Spatulas

    With their help, it is convenient to scoop up and distribute sugar paste. It is better to give preference to disposable wooden spatulas, preferably thick ones that can withstand the weight of a thick sugar mass. Wide spatulas are suitable for depilation of areas on the body, and narrow wooden sticks for the face. In order to save money, you can only purchase wide spatulas and, if necessary, break them in half.

  • Strips

    They are woven, paper, polymer, used in the bandage technique, which is more understandable and easy to do for a beginner. They will also help remove sticky caramel from the surface of the skin.

  • Spray or disinfectant lotion

    It removes all impurities and degreases the skin before sugaring, usually included in the sugar depilation kit.

  • Talc

    It will absorb excess moisture, provide good adhesion of the paste to the hairs, and prevent caramel from sticking. It is applied with a cotton pad against hair growth, lifting them from the roots, this will also help to remove vegetation qualitatively. With particular care, you need to treat areas prone to sweating: armpits, bikini area and inner thighs.

  • Sheet or towel

    It is better for them to cover the workspace, so you are guaranteed not to stain the furniture, floor and walls. Sugar paste is easily washed off the fabric.

  • Wipes

    It doesn’t matter which ones, they are needed to remove excess or remnants of the paste from the skin during the sugaring process.

This list of things necessary for the shugaring procedure can be quite limited. If you master this art professionally, then the question of acquiring a couch and special equipment (for example, a wax maker) will gradually arise.

What cosmetic products are needed for care after depilation by shugaring and between procedures?

  • paste;

  • putty knife;

  • powder;

  • degreasing lotion;
