Virologist prof. Włodzimierz Gut is of the opinion that the level of immunity against the coronavirus achieved in Poland means that there is no risk of a health care collapse. He believes that with the fourth wave of the epidemic, there will be a maximum of 1-2 thousand per day. new cases.
Coronavirus in Poland: forecasts for the fourth wave
– We cannot expect the daily infection count to fall below zero. There will always be some cases in a country where about 40 million people live. Comparisons on such small numbers are so risky that even an increase of 50 percent. out of the number 100, it says little. Because it may be associated, for example, with the fact that 20 people who got infected from each other return from a trip. Therefore, I would not exaggerate with alarmist tones. It is clear to me that if the number of infections increases in Europe, it will increase somewhat in Poland. In my opinion, the level of immunity achieved in Poland thanks to vaccinations and disease is already guaranteed by the fact that we are not threatened by the collapse of the health service. – the virologist said in an interview with PAP.
According to prof. Guta, the daily number of infections during the next wave will also not be higher than 1-2 thousand cases a day.
He added that everyone should simply consider before the fall infection season whether they want to join the resistant group through safe vaccination or dangerous disease.
– It is a paradox that both vaccinations and the increase in disease rates bring us closer to herd immunity. The individual cost for those who catch the virus and are not vaccinated, however, can be huge – pointed out prof. Gut.
He added that the UK authorities will not say it outright, but it has now been decided to achieve herd immunity even faster by infections.
– A huge part of the society was vaccinated there and it was decided that there are simply no more people willing to do so. Seeing that the health service was no longer in danger of collapsing, the rest was set loose. It may not sound very correct, but it is. The restrictions were lifted and the vulnerable part of the population (a significant minority there) will get it quite quickly – said prof. Gut.
According to the virologist, it would be better if Poles, unconvinced to vaccinate, do it as soon as possible, because the problem of vaccine shortage no longer exists, but if vaccination is not compulsory, some people will simply not be convinced by anything.
