Weakened immunity of the child and the frequent occurrence of diseases and infections is a problem for many parents. To some extent, our immunity is written in our genes, but this does not mean that we have no influence on its strengthening. Childhood is very important in building a good “protective system” for the body, and appropriate efforts during this period may result in less susceptibility to diseases in adult life. What to avoid in order not to unknowingly weaken the toddler’s immune system?

One of the more controversial issues is the use of antibiotics by children. In some situations, of course, it is unavoidable, but try to ensure that the child takes it only when it is really necessary. If you come across a doctor who constantly prescribes antibiotics (because they are the most powerful weapon in the fight against bacteria), try visiting another doctor and see if he says the same. Unfortunately, antibiotics in excess are not without drawbacks and can destroy the child’s immune system. When you give this type of medicine, remember to give prebiotics at the same time, which will rebuild the natural bacterial flora in the baby’s body.

Do not avoid movement, walks and always dress your child appropriately for the weather

Although most mothers make sure that their children are dressed appropriately for the outside temperature, unfortunately, sometimes it happens that the child is dressed too lightly or too thickly. It is not advisable for the child to sweat in clothes (then it is easy to catch a cold), so when it is cool and sunny, try to dress them lighter than on those more frosty days. Moreover, usually children are constantly on the move, playing and running, so they warm up quickly. If you are not sure if your child is properly dressed, put your hand on the nape of his neck – he should be warm, but not sweaty and cold. The best way to dress in uncertain weather is the so-called. “onion” outfit, i.e. putting on several layers of clothing that can be taken off if necessary.

It is also important to encourage the child to spend time actively. Walks, outdoor activities, a playground – all this regardless of the weather (apart from really extreme situations such as rain or frost) should be the basis for the toddler’s functioning. The more time he spends at home, in front of the TV or computer, the more difficult it will be for him to transform his habits in adult life. A sedentary lifestyle threatens many diseases, including obesity and poor immunity, so try to make your child get as much exercise as possible in the fresh air. In the autumn and winter period, humidify the air in the apartment, e.g. with a special humidifier and ventilate all rooms from time to time.

Do not smoke cigarettes around the child, remember that it should be well rested and have its “circadian rhythm”

Cigarettes in general are not good for the health of either parents or toddler, but smoking them around a child or pregnant woman is already a significant exaggeration. Cigarette smoke impairs the child’s immune system, because the toxic and carcinogenic substances present with it cause changes in the epithelium of the respiratory tract. Then pathogenic microorganisms have easier access to the baby’s body.

Immunity is also affected by the amount and quality of sleep, so it is important that the child goes to bed at the same time every day. The better he sleeps, the better his immune system functions. Sometimes it’s good to take a nap during the day, e.g. after lunch. It is also important to reduce stress in the child’s life. The most stressful factor in the life of a little person, which we can influence, is chaotic. Therefore, at home there should be a constant routine of meals, bathing, sleeping, walking – then the child will be less exposed to stress and much more willing to undertake individual “tasks” during the day.
