The main attractions of Venice
Doge is the title of head of state in the Italian maritime republics. The first doge was Paulo Lucio Anafesto. Presumably, the first doges served as governors of the Byzantine Empire.
Doge’s Palace
One of the main attractions is the Doge’s Palace. It was intended to hold meetings of the Senate and Grand Council. The judges of the Supreme Court also administered justice here.
This palace was built and transformed over several centuries. The first palace building was built in 810. It is not known exactly when the palace building, which we can see today, was built. The approximate date of its construction is the 14-15th century.

There are many halls in the palace. The first of them are led by the “Golden Staircase”, the author of which is Sansovino. In the Doge’s Palace there are the Hall of the Grand Council, the Hall of Elections, the Hall of the Compass (here the convicts were awaiting their verdict), the Hall of the Council of Ten.

St. Mark’s Cathedral
Not far from the Doge’s Palace is the Cathedral of St. Mark. This cathedral is the most beautiful representative of Byzantine architecture. The building of the cathedral is built in the shape of a cross, and at the intersection is the main dome.

St. Mark’s Cathedral

Inside the temple there is a colorful altar adorned with 2000 precious stones. In 1797 Napoleon stole several stones from the altar. But most of them remain in place, and are under protective glass.

This bridge is considered the oldest. Until the 19th century, it was actually the only crossing over the Grand Canal. The Rialto Bridge was built in 1181, but then it was a completely unreliable pontoon bridge.

In 1264 the bridge was converted into a wooden one. But it was the material of the construction of the bridge that caused its first destruction – in 1310, soldiers accidentally set it on fire. Another destruction happened in 1444. Then the bridge collapsed due to a large crowd of spectators of the regatta.
There are more than 20 boutiques on the bridge. However, they are not the only ones that attract tourists. The bridge stands out for its architecture. The only arch of the bridge has a height of 7,5 m, but even this height allows all ships to pass without problems.

The area is trapezoidal. On the north side of the square is the building of the Old Prosecutor’s Office. There is a bell on the clock tower attached to the building. Bronze statues hit him every hour. The height of this bell tower reaches almost 100 m.
