What to say if you are asked to make a toast?

Most of us feel taken aback by such a request. What to say? How long to talk? Joking or being serious? But with some preparation, even not the most eloquent person will be able to utter a few words that will be appropriate and will please the hosts and guests of the holiday. What advice do etiquette experts give?

Since the beginning of time, toast has been a part of almost every culture. At formal and informal events, they create a festive mood and show gratitude and appreciation. This is a simple gesture, but there is a certain protocol that should not be forgotten. Etiquette expert Christina Tubbritt reveals the secrets of a good toast.

Toast is not a speech

A toast does not mean a long speech for several minutes. These are one or two sentences that are pronounced in honor of a particular person, group of people or organization.

The first toast is from the host of the evening

At an event, whether it’s a casual cocktail party or a formal banquet reception, the host or hostess is the first to toast at the start of the meal to welcome their guests. Later, for example during the dessert course, guests can also take the initiative.

At the wedding reception, the best man is expected to make the first toast. Most royal brides don’t give speeches at their wedding celebrations, but Meghan Markle, for example, clearly had thoughts she wanted to express on the most important day of her life, so she toasted against the rules.

What drink

First, make sure you and your guests have filled their glasses. It is believed that talking with an empty glass is bad luck. Champagne is the best option for these occasions, but water or another non-alcoholic drink is fine too. Many mistakenly believe that only alcohol should be in the glass during the toast.

Stand or sit

In a small company, remain seated during the toast, but in a group of twelve or more, you must be sure to stand up so that everyone can see you, and the rest are not required to rise.

Don’t knock on the glass

When trying to get the group’s attention, don’t tap the glass, but say politely, “Let me get your attention.” This may need to be repeated several times, but it should be done politely, patiently and with a smile.

Don’t drink to yourself

If the toast is in your honor, stay where you are and smile gratefully. It’s like applause. Say “Thank you” at the end. If there is room on the table, put your glass down and don’t hold it in your hands. If the host has singled you out among the guests, you can return the toast to him in turn.

“For health!”

Toasts are made to wealth, happiness, love and friendship, but the most common toast in the world is to health. If you raise a glass in the presence of people from other cultures, then it is a good gesture to say the words in their language.

A simple toast should indicate the person or group that is being honored, tying it to some occasion or event. But a birthday is usually a favorable arena for jokes.

Prepare in advance

If the host of the evening is waiting for you to toast on a formal occasion, prepare in advance and practice. The toast should last no longer than three or four minutes, and the attention should be focused on the words, not on you.

It is acceptable to take notes, but only look at them from time to time, and not read, since your actions should look quite natural. Be sincere and avoid long speeches.

After the toast, it’s time for small talk. Today, a table conversation often involves three or four people sitting next to each other. If you notice that one of your neighbors has no one to talk to, either include him in the conversation, or turn around during a break to give him some time.

Even if you have nothing in common with your neighbor, look around. You can talk about food and wine, decor, music, fashion and the people around you.

Don’t be afraid to toast! Sincere words spoken from the heart in any company will be appreciated.
