What to Hang on Floral Wallpaper Walls: Designer Tips

The task, let’s face it, is not an easy one. It is difficult to pick up interior accessories with floral wallpaper – there is a risk that the abundance of colors and lines will ripple in the eyes.

Colorful floral or geometric patterns on the walls are a challenge in itself for a designer. It is quite difficult to choose decor for them, because accents are important in interiors, and bright wallpapers are an accent in themselves. But this does not mean that you have to look at bare walls or re-glue the wallpaper. You just need to follow a few rules – and the interior will sparkle in a new way.

A floral print can be a subtle and unobtrusive backdrop that adds visual depth to flat walls, or a bold accent on one wall. It can be small or large, classic or graphic. The theme of flowers in the interior has always been and remains relevant, and even changing epochs and styles have not reduced the relevance of floral prints. Over the years, only their style has changed: the flowers on the wallpaper have gone from naturalistic to stylized as pixel graphics.

Today, floral patterns are undergoing another renaissance. Quite often you can find large or medium-sized bright “flower” walls. The “picturesque” stylistics of the print are also not uncommon. Such a visual solution creates the effect of fluctuations in color and shape – unusual bends of flowers, stems. All this, together with the coloristic variety, creates an atmosphere of ease and lightness. The abundance of color, even on dark wallpaper, imposes certain restrictions on further interior decoration.

Even one wall with a floral print is already a huge surface that cannot be ignored in any way. Choosing such a design technique, you need to understand that the rest of the interior – from the carpet to the flower pot – should be inscribed in the theme and color of the wallpaper.

On the one hand, a flower wall is one of the simplest design tricks for creating a spectacular and stylish interior. What could be simpler – I chose wallpaper, took a piece with me to the store and selected curtains, pillows, carpets, vases by color. On the other hand, this is not such a simple technique, because it will take a lot of time to find items matching the color.

It is extremely important to be able to maintain color balance in the room – not to make everything one color or, more likely, not to create excessive variegation. After all, it is very easy to make a mistake: it is enough to take a carpet of bright colors, and two large and variegated spots will appear in the room. And instead of harmony, you end up with lurid bad taste.

Different rules apply for small and large floral prints, but there is one thing in common for all – moderation… It is better if only one wall is bright, and the rest remain monochromatic. So you will focus on the best angle in the interior, for example, on a wall with a fireplace or with a headboard, on the area above the sofa, next to the kitchen table, and so on.

If you would like to decorate a fireplace or other area near floral wallpaper, use accessories in soothing colors: Hang a neutral light wall clock, throw in a blanket or a pair of unobtrusive beige pillows, put on a small white lamp.

You should not make an accent wall where there is a window: it will always draw attention, and the flower wall may turn out to be invisible or, even worse, “garbage”.

Having chosen a wall for accent, you need to stylistically combine it with other walls. For this it is good to use decorating with frames and paintings… The secret is simple: if the wall with flowers is very bright, then choose the same bright photos or paintings, but in one-color frames, and collect a collage from them.

A more interesting solution is multicolored frames in shadesthat echo the colors of the wallpaper, but in this case it is recommended to use dim images inside the frames to avoid excessive variegation.

Floral wallpapers themselves should not be decorated with frames: they are already bright, and the additional decor will only visually make them heavier. Not a bad option – hang a mirror on the wallpaper, in which a part of the solid-colored wall will be reflected.

Also, don’t choose modern decor in styles other than wallpaper. In other words, if your wallpaper is in the style of shabby chic or charm, then it is better to choose frames and mirrors with a slight aging effect and retro shapes, so it will be more harmonious. But if the floral wallpaper is especially colorful – graphic, very bright colors, then you can experiment with more daring decor – colored plastic, gloss, and so on.
