In summer, mosquitoes are a real nuisance. Although their bite, apart from persistent itching, does not hurt us much, some people, after contact with the insect, struggle with something more than just a simple blister. Can you be allergic to mosquitoes?

A stronger reaction to a mosquito bite occurs primarily in allergy sufferers, but patients with asthma may have the most trouble. The insect introduces foreign particles into the human body and in people prone to an allergic reaction, they can activate the immune system.

It’s just a mosquito

The body’s reaction to mosquito saliva is completely different than to the venom of wasps, bees, hornets. The first symptoms of a mosquito allergy appear very slowly. Bite blisters are more itchy, a little bigger, more red, but usually they do not arouse our concern.

The problem arises when we are regularly bitten by these insects. The body’s reaction will be more intense and in each subsequent season we can react more and more, the changes will be bigger and bigger.

Fortunately, being allergic to mosquito saliva is not as dangerous as being allergic to wasp or bee venom. Although some changes may be extensive, accompanied by abscesses or even fever, it is still only a local reaction. So far, there are no studies that would say that mosquitoes can cause severe anaphylactic shock in humans.

However, there are times when a generalized reaction occurs. Then it is necessary to administer stronger drugs, sometimes antihistamines and glucocorticosteroids.

Don’t wait, act

If you or someone you love know that the reaction to a mosquito bite is extremely strong, you should give an oral antihistamine as soon as possible (available at a pharmacy without a prescription). It is also worth smearing the bitten place with an antihistamine. The reaction is then smaller, but remember that this does not prevent the appearance of blisters on the skin in 100%. It’s also a good idea to have some low-concentration steroid on hand, such as hydrocortisone. It is best to lubricate the changed place two or three times a day. Under no circumstances should we reach for the so-called home ways. Spirit, lemon or onion juice, egg white or hydrogen peroxide will only make matters worse and irritate the skin even more.
