What to do if vision deteriorates in one eye
If you completely lose your sight, then it is unlikely that you will be able to return it. Therefore, for any symptoms of visual impairment in one eye or two, urgent action is needed.
Vision deteriorated in only one eye: causes
At risk are people whose work is constantly connected with a computer and papers. If you do not give your eyes a rest, then you can earn serious ophthalmic diseases. Lack of vitamins, nervous tension, insomnia, unbalanced diet – this also affects the condition and health of the eyes.
Most often, vision falls evenly in two eyes. But sometimes it happens that one eye begins to see worse than the other. There is no need to reassure yourself that everything is not so bad. You should immediately consult a doctor and find out the causes of unilateral visual impairment. A person who has lost vision in one eye feels uncomfortable, as in front of one eye he seems to have a veil.
Common causes of this phenomenon are:
retinal detachment;
strabismus;
injury;
lesion of the lens;
amblyopia (a condition when one eye does not see, or sees much worse than the other1).
The structure of the eyes is very complex, therefore, a violation in the work of an organ invariably entails a drop in visual acuity.
Vision impairment in one eye due to injury
Chemical or mechanical damage to the eyes can cause deterioration or complete loss of vision. In case of hemorrhage, bruising or ingestion of foreign objects, you should immediately seek medical help. Eye injuries are often accompanied by the following symptoms:
a sharp deterioration in vision in the damaged eye;
pain;
edema;
nausea and vomiting.
If the eye is injured with a sharp object, the situation is very dangerous. If the wound has touched the deep layers of the eyeball, then after deterioration, loss of vision may occur. If metal or wood chips get into the eye, you need to try to remove it, then rinse the organ of vision and consult a doctor. If the foreign body is not removed in time, it can provoke an inflammatory process.
If the vision of one eye has deteriorated sharply after sitting at the computer
Eyes need to be engaged and their muscles trained. With a prolonged stay in one position, the muscles of the eyes lose their tone and weaken. In this case, the following are useful. exercises.
Alternately look at near and distant objects. Can be done separately with each eye. But it is better to pay attention to the visually impaired eye.
Rub your palms, put them on your eyes and part of your nose so that no light gets inside. Sit for 4 minutes.
Rotate your eyes clockwise and counterclockwise, draw crosses, squares and rhombuses.
In mild cases, such gymnastics helps the eyes to rest and restores the tone of the eye muscles.
Expert Opinion
– In most cases, eye diseases cause a decrease in vision in both eyes, but there are situations when the deterioration occurs only in one or at first only in one eye2.
Reduced vision can be like sharpAnd gradual for months, years. When vision decreases in one eye, a person may not notice or pay attention for a long time. The problem can be detected with the help of vision diagnostics or by closing first one, then the other eye: as a rule, the difference is immediately noticeable. The problem can be permanent, or it can be transient, so it is very important to monitor your vision.
What symptoms should you look out for in case of visual impairment:
blurry, unclear image;
change in the field of view (narrowing or appearance of a veil in the field of view);
double vision;
distortion;
floating opacities;
pain;
redness of the eye.
Possible causes of blurred vision in one eye
Retinal detachment. The first symptoms may be the appearance of flares, glare (photopsies) and black small flies. In the eye, a rupture of the retinal zone occurs, intraocular fluid rushes through the gap under the retina, which leads to retinal detachment. With a retinal detachment, a person sees a “veil” in the field of vision. The reasons can be myopia, weight lifting, age-related changes (posterior vitreous detachment), trauma. In this case, the likelihood of surgery is very high.
Cataract. In other words, lens opacity. Changes occur in the substance of the lens, it becomes cloudy and ceases to transmit light to the retina. As a rule, this is an age-related change, but the disease also occurs in young patients. The cause can be trauma, eye diseases, and sometimes side effects from taking medication. In this case, surgical treatment is required: the cloudy lens is changed to an intraocular lens (IOL).
Glaucoma. Associated with an increase in intraocular pressure. Untimely access to an ophthalmologist and lack of treatment can provoke not only visual impairment, but also blindness altogether. The disease can give complications even in the absence of complaints, therefore, patients with an established diagnosis should visit an ophthalmologist on an ongoing basis, once every three months, to monitor the course of the disease. In some cases, surgical treatment is required. Glaucoma surgery is designed to preserve existing vision and normalize intraocular pressure.
Changes associated with the structure of the eye. These are myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. In these cases, a gradual decrease in vision occurs, and the most frequent complaints with which patients come to an ophthalmologist are poor near or far vision. There is no single answer as to why deterioration occurs, it is a combination of a number of factors: heredity, nature of work, the amount of time spent at the computer / gadgets, lifestyle. In this case, it is necessary to exclude external factors that contribute to a decrease in visual acuity. Minimize the time spent at the computer and arrange the rest of the eyes when the load is high on them. It is also necessary to select the correct correction – glasses or contact lenses. Surgical treatment is also not excluded.
Injury and inflammation. Characterized by a sharp decrease in vision. With timely referral for specialized help, serious consequences can be avoided. With proper treatment, full restoration of vision is possible.
Any fears and doubts regarding the eyes should be under the mandatory control of an ophthalmologist, therefore, at the first symptoms, you should not take a wait-and-see attitude or self-medicate, but you should turn to a professional for help, which will prevent serious problems and undesirable consequences.
