The last day of Shrovetide is called Forgiveness Sunday, this is the time when we ask for forgiveness and forgive our relatives, friends and acquaintances ourselves.
What to do on Forgiveness Sunday
1. It is imperative to go to church services. This is a special day for Orthodox Christians, because the Sermon on the Mount is read, and during the service the priest asks for forgiveness from his parishioners.
2. On this day, it is not only possible, but also necessary to ask for forgiveness from relatives and friends. To do this, you do not need to list your sins and grievances, but it is enough to say: “Forgive me!”
3. Also on Sunday you can go to the cemetery and ask for forgiveness from deceased relatives. By the way, it was a tradition for our ancestors to come to the cemetery with pancakes on the last day of Maslenitsa.
How to properly ask for forgiveness
It is enough to say: “Forgive me!”, And in response to hear: “God will forgive – and I forgive!”. At the same time, in no case should a person be denied forgiveness. This was considered a great sin.
We must certainly forgive from the bottom of our hearts those who ask for it without any conditions. That is, to sincerely repent and sincerely forgive. This will help cleanse your soul and help another to find peace.
How to properly have dinner on Forgiveness Sunday
On the evening of Forgiveness Sunday, the whole family (without guests!) Sits down at the table to eat pancakes and food for the last time before fasting, which will have to be abandoned during Lent. In ancient times, by the way, it was customary to sit at the table 7 times – according to the number of days in Maslenitsa.
And after that, you can think about how to live Great Lent with a clear conscience.
