What time to take vitamin D? Check if you are doing it right

Vitamin D plays a very important role in our body. It is responsible, among other things, for bone health and strengthens the immune system. In our latitude, we need to supplement it, especially in the autumn and winter season. Do you know what time of the day is it best to ingest vitamin D? Check that you are not doing it wrong.

Vitamin D is essential for health

Vitamin D is responsible, among other things, for regulating the level of calcium and phosphorus in our body. It is these elements that influence the health of bones, teeth and muscles. If the body becomes deficient in vitamin D, there are serious health consequences. Bones may become deformed in children. In turn, in adults, bone pains appear. In addition, the immune system suffers from it, becoming weakened and coping less well with the viruses attacking it.

Vitamin D sources

How can vitamin D deficiency be prevented? First of all, we should take care of a balanced diet. The following products are good sources of this vitamin:

  1. oily fish (e.g. salmon, cod, tuna, herring, mackerel, sardines),
  2. eggs,
  3. liver,
  4. cheeses,
  5. some mushrooms.

Vitamin D is also synthesized in the skin when exposed to sunlight. All you need to do is expose your skin to the sun for 15-20 minutes. Unfortunately, this is not always possible in our latitude. In autumn and winter, the sun hardly shows up here.

Therefore, GiS recommends supplementing vitamin D in the following doses from October to March:

  1. 2000 IU (50 µg) for dietary supplements intended for a healthy population of adults up to 75 years of age,
  2. 4000 IU (1000 µg) for dietary supplements intended only for healthy people over 75 years of age (try Omega 3 + D3 4000 IU YANGO – dietary supplement for seniors).

Which vitamin D should I choose? Solgar’s offer includes vitamin D capsules, liquid vitamin D, and vitamin D lozenges.

When is the best time to take vitamin D?

If you thought you could take vitamin D at any time of the day or night, you are wrong. It turns out that this should be a fixed time. Why? First of all, thanks to the routine, we will not miss any dose. We will be reaching for the pill instinctively. In addition, we will increase the effectiveness of the supplement.

So what time of the day is optimal? Vitamin D should be taken by us in the morning. First of all, because it is easier for us to remember such things in the morning.

However, the second reason is more important. If we take vitamin D in the evening it may negatively affect our sleep quality. If you take the supplement too late, you will not have time to absorb it. This causes low levels of vitamin D in the blood. This, in turn, affects the length of our sleep, which becomes much shorter and less restful.

There is another reason why vitamin D should be taken in the morning. It dissolves in fats, so it is worth taking it, for example, during breakfast. Thanks to this, the level of vitamin D in the blood will increase rapidly.

However, the most important thing is not to miss a dose. Only regular vitamin D supplementation will keep you healthy and immune.
