🙂 Hello everyone! Thank you for choosing the article “What they do on Parent’s Saturday” on this site!
What are parenting Saturdays
Parental, memorial, grandfathers, Saturday of showers. This is how the Orthodox tradition calls the days when, according to special rules, the departed ancestors are commemorated. First of all, deceased parents and relatives are commemorated.
There are several similar days in the Orthodox charter. During Great Lent, immediately after Easter (Radonitsa), on the eve of Trinity, during small fasting. On parental Saturdays, they attend church services and the graves of loved ones. By the way, it was on Saturday that Jesus was dead in the Tomb.
How to behave correctly on memorial days
On the eve of the evening, you need to prepare notes with the names of the deceased relatives in order to submit them to the priest.
It is customary to write the names of the deceased in the genitive case. At the same time, it is allowed to remember and pray only for those who were baptized according to the Orthodox tradition.
It is impossible to mention those who committed suicide. Pray for them at home, ask the priest how to do it right. They will explain everything to you.
In the same way, food for the requiem is prepared ahead of time. This set should not contain alcohol, meat, sausages. It is always appropriate to bring with you to the church the vegetable oil and flour necessary for baking prosphora. They bring cereals, sugar, fruits.
Instead of food, you can donate the amount of money you can to the temple.
In the morning they go to church, give notes to the priest and attend the service.
After the service, they go to the cemetery – get out, light a candle on the grave or an icon lamp, lay flowers.
No meals – especially with alcohol – are started at the grave.
In the evening, a quiet memorial dinner is arranged – preferably with dishes that were loved by deceased loved ones.
Strong drinks are not overused during dinner – the maximum that is allowed is a glass of wine.
What not to do on parental Saturdays
I must say that there are many prohibitions regarding parental Saturday.
It is forbidden to leave tobacco or alcohol on the grave, even if the deceased “respected” these things.
Remembering the deceased, they cannot be criticized, condemned or reproached for anything.
A popular sign says that on parental Saturday, after visiting the cemetery, one must say goodbye to the dead correctly. Namely: when leaving, say not “Goodbye”, but exclusively “Goodbye”.
At home on this day, you cannot sort things out, quarrel, shout.
It is also not allowed to have noisy fun, watch entertaining TV shows.
On parental Saturday, no one is denied alms.
You cannot engage in “unnecessary” household work – planting plants, cleaning the house, building, sewing, washing … Only necessary household chores are allowed.
In general, parental Saturday should be spent piously and peacefully. This will benefit both those who left and those who remain.
