The European Medicines Agency announced in a recent press release that there is a link between the administration of the AstraZeneki vaccine and the occurrence of thrombosis. This is, according to the EMA, a very rare side effect, and the benefits of the preparation outweigh the possible risks. However, the agency highlights symptoms following vaccination that should not be ignored.
- It’s official: thrombosis can be a very rare side effect after vaccination with AstraZeneka
- The data collected by the EMA show that thrombosis after taking AstraZeneki mainly affected young women. Symptoms lasted up to two weeks after vaccination
- The EMA also identified symptoms characteristic of thrombosis. There are six of them. The occurrence of any of them after vaccination with AstraZeneka requires immediate contact with a doctor

Shortness of breath or shortness of breath after AstraZeneca
Difficulty breathing or shallow breathing may be silent symptoms of thrombosis. They may be a symptom of a pulmonary embolism. On list EMA dyspnoea is the first symptom that should worry patients if they have been vaccinated with AstraZeneki in recent days.
Chest pain after AstraZeneca
The second symptom mentioned by the EMA is stinging in the area of the sternum. Although chest pain is usually associated with an infarction, it is also characteristic of a pulmonary embolism. Additional symptoms may include tightness in the breasts and problems with breathing. If these symptoms occur after vaccination with AstraZeneka, immediate contact with your doctor is necessary. It is a life-threatening condition – sudden cardiac arrest may occur.
Swelling of the legs after AstraZeneca
The European Medicines Agency lists edema of the lower limbs as another symptom that should not be underestimated after vaccination with AstraZeneka. The legs may be swollen, the skin may turn pale or take on a gray-blue tinge. Additionally, there may be pain in the legs which is relieved when they are lifted upwards. All these symptoms indicate deep vein thrombosis and require medical attention. Numbness or paresis of the limbs may also indicate thrombosis.
Persistent abdominal pain with AstraZeneca
Another symptom that could indicate thrombosis as a side effect of COVID-19 vaccination, according to the EMA, is abdominal pain. It is a symptom that is easily confused with other ailments, and the agency itself did not indicate which specific pain in the abdominal cavity should be worrying. First of all, it is supposed to be “persistent” pain. Therefore, if a person experiences pain in the abdomen after vaccination, they should consult a doctor.

Blurred vision or headache after AstraZeneca
A severe and persistent headache, especially in the eye socket, is one of the symptoms of thrombosis. Another is blurred vision that may result from blood flow disorders. Any worrying neurological symptoms after receiving AstraZeneki should be consulted with a specialist.
Small spots of blood under the skin other than where the vaccine was injected after AstraZeneca
A separate symptom indicated by the EMA are small spots of blood that will appear under the skin. However, it is not about the injection site itself, but other areas on the body. It is also a signal that something bad may be happening in the body and that medical intervention is necessary.

Thrombosis. Who is at risk?
The EMA analysis shows that after AstraZeneki, thrombosis occurred mainly in women under 60 years of age who took the first dose. Symptoms appeared within two weeks of vaccination. However, it is still unknown what factors cause thrombosis after taking the preparation.
Thrombosis is a dangerous disease of the veins that primarily affects people over 40 years of age. Statistics collected over the years show that the risk of thrombosis is greater in immobilized people and those who have undergone surgery in the lower limbs, pelvis or abdominal cavity. Thrombosis is more common in pregnant and puerperal women and those who use hormonal contraception. A risk factor is also cancer, blood clotting disorders, a history of stroke, heart attack, obesity with varicose veins of the lower extremities, as well as an unhealthy lifestyle (including smoking).
