Covid data – week to week comparison
Today’s data show the increase in the number of infections and deaths compared to previous health ministry reporting periods. This was predictable, given the fact that last week the number of new infections hovered around 5, and yesterday it came close to last Wednesday’s record – 7175 cases were reported then, and 23 on August 6176.
A week ago there were also a lot of infections (on a weekly basis), but still less than today (22 thousand 712). In the last weeks of July, the talks were about approx. 20 thousand. patients, which was a significant increase compared to half (12 thousand), and even more so at the beginning of this month, when there were 4-7 thousand per week. infections. In June, the situation was even better – the scale of new infections on a weekly basis was 1-2 thousand.
It is worth adding that the report of the Ministry of Health takes into account only the results of tests carried out officially, i.e. in a hospital or primary health care facility (these results are entered in a public register). There are no results of research that Poles carry out independently, at home, using rapid antigen tests.
If you have symptoms of COVID-19 – get tested. At Medonet Market you can buy:
- COVID-19 Rapid Test – Antigenic Test for Self-Control
- COVID-19 antigen test – SGTi-flex COVID-19 Ag
- Home COVID-19 Ag SGTi-flex cartridge test
- COVID-19 – Rapid Saliva Antigen Test
Considering the fact that sales of such products have recently increased significantly (PEX PharmaSequence data shows that approx. 250 antigen tests are sold per week, compared to 70 kits at the beginning of July), positive test results there is definitely more towards COVID-19.
How much exactly? According to cautious estimates of experts, from several to several dozen times more than is stated in the reports of the Ministry of Health.
«Our estimates show that infections may be 20 to 50 times more than the official ministerial data»- told PAP Dr. Franciszek Rakowski from the Interdisciplinary Center for Mathematical and Computational Modeling at the University of Warsaw.
Increases are also seen in the number of deaths. In the second half of June, a dozen or so of them were recorded weekly, today more are reported every day. The previous health ministry report mentioned 81 deaths due to COVID-19 per week. In the new week, the corresponding figure was “reached” already on Saturday, August 20. Today’s weekly death figures are at their highest since the beginning of the summer wave of SARS-CoV-2 infections.
Experts are already thinking about the fall wave of infections
The current wave is not over yet, but experts are already thinking about what autumn will bring, which is considered the beginning of the so-called flu season, i.e. an increased risk of respiratory infections. What are the outlooks?
“Now the most likely scenario is that if we deal with another wave, it will rather be postponed to November, December»- says the Minister of Health, Adam Niedzielski. As he added, “the period of 20 weeks is the period when we gain such short-term immunity, which postpones this fall wave, which we always talked about in the context of the turn of September and October”.
The government declares that it is prepared for any scenario. «We have a plan in place for the fall, as we have always done. Well in advance. We assume several variants “- said Deputy Health Minister Waldemar Kraska in an interview with PAP, adding that«an increase in the number of new infections is inevitable in the autumn ». «The only question now is whether it will be the beginning of October or in the long term. But there will certainly be a greater number »- he assured.
How will this affect the health care system in Poland? «We estimate that in the worst scenarios, 12-15 thousand people will be needed every day this fall. beds for COVID-19 patients»- assesses Dr. Franciszek Rakowski.
