The prognosis for the pandemic is unfortunately not optimistic, says Adam Niedzielski, currently in Brussels at a meeting of EU health ministers. – Everyone states that the epidemic crisis we are dealing with will continue in the coming months (…). Unfortunately, there are no positive signals, he admitted.

Will the validity period of Covid certificates be shortened?

On December 7, Health Minister Adam Niedzielski takes part in a meeting of EU health ministers with the participation of the EU Health and Safety Commissioner. The talks concern, among others EU Covid certificates. Journalists asked the minister if there was an agreement on the EC’s proposal to shorten the validity period of Covid certificates from one year to nine months. The validity of the document would be extended after the intake of a “booster dose” of the COVID-19 vaccine.

– There is no such unified position yet. Various formulas are considered. (…) When talking to other health ministers, we can clearly see that after six months, the decline in immunity after vaccination begins. Naturally, this way of thinking is common, so that these nine months will be the standard – said Adam Niedzielski. He added that a compromise on this issue would be reached.

Minister Niedzielski: the prognosis for the pandemic is not optimistic

The ministers’ talks are also devoted to the pandemic situation. As Niedzielski said, the prognosis for the pandemic is unfortunately not optimistic. – Everyone says that the epidemic crisis we are dealing with will continue in the coming months. This is the reason, among other things, that we have decided to increase the scale of the restrictions in the country. Unfortunately, there are no positive signals – he pointed out.

The ministers’ discussions also concerned the preparation of cooperation mechanisms that would allow for a quick response to any crises related to threats to public health. – A new institution is being established, the HERA office, which will be responsible in the commission for quick purchases, especially purchases – at the moment – of vaccinations – he said. Niedzielski added that the priorities are slowly shifting towards the purchase of drugs. “We have more and more new test substances,” he explained.

Adam Niedzielski also said that he had the opportunity to talk to the health commissioner Stella Kyriakides about the error that appeared as a result of issuing certificates after the second vaccination with J&J. – There is a two-week window in which this certificate was not valid, even though it was not the second dose, but a booster. The Commissioner has made a commitment that by the end of the week she will present a solution that will help us overcome this problematic situation, informed the Minister of Health.

He added that Stella Kyriakides reported that more than 20 million people were vaccinated in the EU with the J&J vaccine. – It is worth noting that as many as 3 million people are – to my knowledge – vaccinated in Poland. Perhaps in the scale of the entire EU it does not seem to be such a dilemma, but it is still a problem in Poland – he stressed.
