The AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is still considered by many to be of the ‘inferior kind’. Because they are less effective than the Moderna and Pfizer preparations, and because they are suspected of causing blood clots in vaccinated people. What is the actual risk of serious side effects from this vaccine? The British organization dealing with risk assessment decided to juxtapose them with others.
- AstraZeneca is one of several vaccines used in Europe
- For several weeks, there has been a stir around this preparation related to the risk of thrombosis in vaccinated people
- The risk is several to several dozen cases per million. Among the 25 million people vaccinated, 86 cases of blood clots were reported last week, the European Medicines Agency reported
- What does it look like in relation to the risk of death in a traffic accident or death as a result of a lightning strike? This was checked by analysts from the British Winton Center for Risk and Evidence Communication

Is AstraZeneca against COVID-19 safe?
The COVID-19 vaccine from Oxford-AstraZeneca remains a cause for concern. Especially after the European Medicines Commission confirmed a few days ago that the vaccine can actually cause thrombosis. However, the EMA still recommends the use of this vaccine, upholding its position that the benefits of this vaccine in preventing COVID-19 outweigh the risk of side effects.
What is the real danger of using this vaccine? And how does it compare with other threats resulting not only from the COVID-19 pandemic?
The Winton Center for Risk and Evidence Communication, a British risk assessment institution operating at the University of Cambridge, approached the case perversely. She examined how the risk of serious side effects after vaccination with AstraZeneca compared to, inter alia, the risk of death from COVID-19 and the risk of death in a traffic accident.
Doctor Bartosz Fiałek wrote about the results of these analyzes on Facebook.
Risk for the age group of 25:
- The risk of serious side effects of vaccination against COVID-19 with Oxford – AstraZeneca – 11 in 1 million
- The risk of death from SARS-CoV-2 infection – 23 per 1 million
- Risk of death from trauma: 110 out of 1 million
- Risk of death from traffic accident: 38 out of 1 million
- Risk of death from lightning: 1 in 1 million
Risk for the age group of 55:
- The risk of serious side effects of vaccination against COVID-19 with Oxford – AstraZeneca – 4 in 1 million
- The risk of death from SARS-CoV-2 infection – 800 per 1 million
- Risk of death from trauma: 180 out of 1 million
- Risk of death from traffic accident: 23 out of 1 million
- Risk of death from lightning: 1 in 1 million
Vaccination with AstraZeneca and thrombosis
Andrzej Ryś, director of healthcare systems, medical products and innovation at the European Commission, member of the Governing Board of the European Medicines Agency spoke to Medonet about the risk of thrombosis in the event of vaccination with AstraZeneca.
- What symptoms after AstraZeneka should worry you? These are signs of a thrombosis
– The mechanism of blood clots formation in specific people after vaccination is also not entirely clear. We suspect that this is an immune response resulting from a very specific pattern of traits in the bodies of patients who have had such problems. But the whole relationship is not clear, it is not known what triggers or promotes such a reaction – explained Dr. Ryś.
Vaccinations and thrombosis. How often has it appeared in Poland?
According to the official data of the Ministry of Health on April 8, out of 7 million 72 people vaccinated with at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, 5 people had adverse reactions to the vaccine. 744 patients. 4 thousand 907 cases were mild.
- Szczawiński: this is the end of this epidemic in Poland. We have incurred enormous costs, we have achieved nothing
Blood clots as an undesirable effect were found in 15 people – 11 women and four men. Two deaths occurred – one woman and one man died.
However, it is not known exactly after which preparations the thrombosis occurred in patients, the data of the Ministry of Health on adverse reactions after vaccination do not contain such information.
