What results can we expect from a bacteriological examination?
The sample obviously depends on the site of infection.
It can be done by simple frottis, using a special cotton swab, or after taking a sample of urine, sputum, blood, etc.
The sample is then analyzed in the laboratory and “cultured”. This means that it is spread (seeded) on a nutrient medium that allows the growth of bacteria.
After a few days, the bacteria present are counted and analyzed (by different techniques). This makes it possible to identify the pathogenic species in question.
Un antibiogramme can also be carried out: it consists of placing the germ in contact with different antibiotics in order to see which molecules it is resistant to and to which substances it is sensitive. This makes it possible to better target the treatment.
What results?
Depending on the purpose of the analysis and the site of infection, the result will, among other things:
- identify the bacteria in question
- to offer effective antibiotic treatment
- to make a diagnosis
- to take health measures (in the event of collective infection for example)
