What tick repellants are there on the market?

Repellants are a variety of insect repellants, not only ticks, but also mosquitoes, flies, flies, wasps and bees. These products can be distinguished by activities of a different scope, so it is always worth making sure that a given product will protect us against ticks. For these arachnids, the most important thing is to prevent bites, as a tick bite is a risk of contracting Lyme disease or tick-borne encephalitis.

Agent for ticks – DEET

DEET (N, N-Diethyl-m-toluamide) is considered to be the most effective agent for ticks. It actually repels ticks and other insects, has a characteristic smell, is long-lasting, and is waterproof, but care should be taken when using it. Preparations with DEET can sensitize, cause irritation, have a toxic effect on the nervous system, and dissolve plastics.

DEET agents must not be used in pregnant women and newborns. There are also limitations related to its use in children – depending on the age, you should choose a DEET product with an appropriate concentration.

Below are recommendations for the use of preparations with different concentrations of DEET:

1. 9,5 percent DEET – for children from 2 years of age (protection lasting 1–2 hours);
2. 25 percent DEET – for children over 3 years of age and adults (90% protection against insects);
3. 50 percent DEET – for adults only.
