The screening is a supplement to medical processes including diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients. During the visit, the patient may receive a referral from a doctor for tests, treatment or to a specialist. The possibility of receiving an e-referral during a television visit depends on whether the doctor will be able to clearly identify the need for a specific service during a remote consultation.
Television visit and the possibility of receiving a referral
In Poland, in the fall of 2018, it began e-referral pilot program, i.e. referrals issued in electronic form. E-referral is one of the solutions used by telemedicine, which favors the modernization of medical systems in the country and better coordination of patient care. The date of introducing mandatory e-referrals is January 1, 2021.
The development of telemedicine is conducive to increasing the scope of services provided as part of television visits. During the e-visit, the patient can already receive an e-prescription, e-certificate or e-referral from the doctor. The possibility of issuing a specific document remotely depends of course on the diagnosis, patient’s health condition or the stage of treatment of a given disease. If the doctor has sufficient premises, he or she may refer you for tests, treatment or to an appropriate specialist.
Availability range electronic benefits in the case of TV viewing it depends on the service provider. The situation may be slightly different in the case of treatment under the National Health Fund and different in the case of private medical care. As part of the e-visit, it is not always possible to receive a referral for some tests, e.g. computed tomography or biopsy. It is always worth getting acquainted with the information on benefits provided by the selected telemedicine clinic.

Television visit – referral for imaging and laboratory tests
During the TV visit, the doctor conducts an interview with the patient, gathers information about the symptoms, medications taken, and discusses the results of the tests to date. If it deems it appropriate at a given stage of diagnosis, treatment or monitoring of the patient’s condition, it may also issue referral for laboratory or imaging tests.
Referral for tests is based on a prior health assessment. If the doctor confirms the medical justification for performing specific tests, we will receive an e-referral. In a situation where distance consultation proves insufficient, it may be necessary to visit the doctor’s office in person or talk to another specialist. However, it should be remembered that individual medical centers may limit the scope of tests ordered as part of e-visits.

Referrals for research that we may not get during a TV visit, it is – depending on the telemedicine clinic – incl. some imaging tests (e.g. X-ray, computed tomography), endoscopic examination, mammography or biopsy. However, an order to perform the above-mentioned examinations can be obtained in the form of an e-referral during a traditional visit to a doctor’s office – if there are indications for their performance.
Television visit – referral for treatment
During the visit, the patient may be referred for treatment. In the case of medical care under the National Health Fund, this may be referral to hospital treatment or outpatient specialist services. During the e-visit, the doctor may refer the patient to an appropriate specialistwho will provide consultation in a given area or will deal with further treatment of the patient.

One of the advantages of telemedicine is the improvement of the process of diagnosis and treatment of the patient through initial teleconsultation, e.g. with an internist or family doctor, who may already at this stage solve the patient’s problem or decide to refer a patient to a specialist. Also, when doubts related to the patient’s health arise during the treatment process, a television visit makes it easier to identify the need for consulting another doctor.
