What not to do outside during a thunderstorm

People managed to subjugate the seas, oceans, space and mountains, but they are still powerless in the face of weather events.

Thunderstorm is one of the most dangerous natural phenomena. Indeed, as a result of a powerful electrical discharge, lightning occurs, which can cause fires and even kill a person. A similar tragic incident recently happened in St. Petersburg – a grandmother and her grandson went out to the water in a thunderstorm, hiding under an umbrella. The metal of the umbrella attracted the lightning, the boy died on the spot. Therefore, it is worth knowing a few simple rules on how to protect yourself in case of bad weather.

To protect yourself from possible consequences, you need to monitor the weather. During a thunderstorm, the direction of the wind usually changes sharply. The atmospheric pressure drops and it becomes stuffy. Birds fly too low and become aggressive. The most dangerous moment of a thunderstorm occurs when literally a moment passes between the lightning and the thunderclap. This means the lightning is very close.

What not to do outside during a thunderstorm

  • Hide under a lonely tree

Before the onset of a thunderstorm, you need to find an area with low-growing trees and squat.

  • Use mobile communications away from towers and houses Electromagnetic waves can attract a discharge. Chances are high that lightning will strike your phone.

  • Cycling in open areas

First, you become a target for lightning. Secondly, the bicycle (since it is made of metal) attracts an electric discharge.

  • Take cover next to metal objects

Avoid electrical wiring, lightning rods, roof drainpipes, television or radio antennas.

  • Lie on the ground or run from the lightning

Lightning striking the ground can strike a person. If the weather is bad in the field, you need to find some kind of hole and squat down. It is also important to keep in mind that clay soil is more dangerous than rocky and sandy soil.

  • Go out to the water or be in a body of water

If you find yourself in a boat in the middle of the river, you need to urgently land on the shore. If it was raining, it is better to take off wet clothes, pour water out of the boat, cover with an awning and spread rubber objects around you, which isolate the body from the discharge. It is also worth considering that the edge of the awning should not touch the surface of the water.

  • Be on a hill

If you notice the first signs of a thunderstorm, you need to go down from the hills. You can hide in crevices and caves if you are in an open area. The main thing is not to lean against rocks or pick up metal objects.
