What not to do around the house a week before the New Year

These little things can ruin the holiday.

The calendar and the days of the week are so unpleasant that December 31 is a working day. There is nothing left to prepare for the holiday. I would like to do my best to jump into the last carriage and celebrate the New Year in an ideal setting. But sometimes it’s better to sacrifice the situation – there is a great chance that imperfection will only worsen. We have compiled a list of things that are best not to start at least a week before the holiday.

Repair

Anyone, even cosmetic. Firstly, in a week you are unlikely to even have time to re-glue the wallpaper. And if you have time, then with the last of your strength, and you will dream of meeting the New Year, lying in a bath with Olivier, and not on the dance floor. Secondly, the renovation symbolizes the beginning of a new life. And if you do not have time to finish it before the holiday, then you will enter the New Year with unfinished business. And as you meet him, you will see him, remember?

Great wash

You don’t want to celebrate the holiday with a full machine of linen, but if you start a general wash a few days before the holiday, then there is a risk that not everything will have time to dry. Especially when it’s damp outside. For example, curtains, bedspreads and furniture covers can hang on the dryer until the first days of January.

Painting and varnishing

Well, comments are unnecessary here. The smell of paint and varnish can stand in an apartment for several weeks, especially since it is cold and not really ventilated. So, if you start some kind of crafts or renovation of furniture, it is better to postpone this activity until spring. Or hand-made in the garage.

Carpet cleaning

Of course, I would like to spend the holiday clean. But what is too late to do is to clean carpets and furniture with detergents. This is because usually these products smell so that you want to leave the house right out the window. And there is a high probability that the smell will not disappear until hour X. And if you overdo it a little with water, there is a risk that the coating simply will not dry out. And then the smell will also have a tinge of mustiness.

 Cooking specific products

There are some dishes, the aroma of which is not easy to get rid of. It seems that the smell absorbs everything around: curtains, clothes, wallpaper. Therefore, prepare, for example, sauerkraut, especially stewed, in advance. The smell of fried or boiled fish also cannot be quickly eroded. The liver should be added to this list. Although you can always say that you are having a fish themed party.

Global permutation

Some people love to rearrange – move furniture back and forth almost every month. And before the holiday, I really want to change something! However, the rearrangement, despite the acute “want”, is still not worth doing on the eve of the holiday. There is a risk that everything will not go according to plan: the new position of the furniture will be annoying, something will be out of place, something will be lost, and something simply will not fit into your plan – the insidious sofa will be longer than necessary, and the bedside table will strive to hit you on the little finger. And there may not be time to play back.

 Online orders

The temptation to take advantage of pre-New Year discounts and profitably buy gifts for relatives, elegantly decorate an apartment and order something for yourself, of course, is great. But then expect that all your orders will come after the New Year. The post office and courier services are now overloaded, and there is no reason to hope for delivery on time.

 Defrosting the refrigerator

This is a full day activity. Are you sure you want to devote the last weekend of the year to fiddling with the refrigerator? If the meat or fish bought for future use thaw out ahead of time, it will also complicate the preparation of festive dishes. After all, re-freezing is the worst thing you can do with them.

A trip to the grocery store

Just before the holidays, there is an unprecedented excitement. Everyone literally breaks off their jobs in order to have time to stock up on food. There will be no crowds in the evenings, on weekends there will be a predictable full house. Moreover, you can run into delays – it happens that stores try to sell under the guise of everything that is stale. To stock up on groceries, you should visit the store in the morning, while everyone is still asleep. True, the assortment on the shelves at such a time is usually small.
